I believe 10 - 15 characters will be sufficient, anything around 30 characters is too much imho, it will deter people from posting at all, if you look at a good percentage of the posts around this forum, many of them are under 30 characters, yet do contain valid points.

examples:
Why not birdy poop? lol /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
26 characters
Doesn't ryhme /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
16 characters
20-30 is my vote
16 characters
sounds good!

Bara
18 characters (assuming line breaks are characters too)
15 - 25 /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
10 characters

Just to name a few examples (out of this post alone).

Another idea is to have the posts always enabled, but ONLY count for the post count if they are over 20 characters or something. That way you can still contribute with small posts, but it won't count to your post count unless you make a worthwhile post.

i agree with mobes. whatever the end vote amount is, perhaps if your able to set it so that it only counts the post if its over x amount? lol, it might come as a bit of a shock to a few members when their post count doesnt go up, but i think they can handle it lol.
oh, and 30, 15, 25, 10 are all fine with me:)

While your suggestion, mobes, is one I would really like to use, coding wise it could present a problem. I\'ll definatly look and see what can be done (apologies if I don\'t get to it till after kb) and I\'ll let you know whether we could easily add something along these lines. Another option which mobes brought up in messenger is to hide the post count from the post info <<< there. It wouldn\'t be disabled and would still be visable on profile pages, but we wouldn\'t be emphasising its \"superiority\".

the "superiority" of post counts is a very good point vulture. certain groups ive noticed have put too much emphasis on the number of posts made by a person...and no doubt there are members here who enjoy seeing their post count go up. maybe we could do a trial run on disabling post counts on the left side of the posts and see what happens. i doubt people will stop posting overnight or go on strike, but it could very well head off any future problems the forum might experience in that sense.

i think 15 to 20 is good also, and maybe add a strip function to it to only allow alphanumeric to parse through just to be a bit safer, you know how some chars can really screw with things... *recalls his xt forum char thingy* lol, we dont want 6 foot wide pages.

I agree with hiding post counts, from the sounds of it character minimums might be a tricky, we do have about 30 staff members - I think that between us we should be able to moderate what we deem to be "pointless" or "spam" posts.
