“It seems like only yesterday I found you two on that step.” The man said.
“Do we know you?” Lyn asked.
“Probably not, you were way too young at the time. I, Lyn, am your father. You too CB.”
“That’s interes..” CB started a sentence.
“No you’re not!” Lyn interrupted CB’s sentence. “My father died in the Gulf War.”
“Yes, your adoptive father did die in the Gulf War. Sniper’s have terribly good aim.” He said without sympathy.
“I loved him, though. How can you say it like that?!” Lyn shouted at the man with a tear in her eye.
“Quite simply put, I didn’t know the man, so I feel nothing for him or against him.”
“I knew it from when I was about five.” CB spoke up. “I got teased at school about being adopted, so I asked my parents and they said yes. It’s horrible not knowing who your parents are.”
“Do you truly wish to know your life stories up until I left you? I will at least give you that choice for now. What you are is very precious to us, and to lose you again well, I really do not have the time nor the body to go looking for you again.”
“Yes.” Lyn whispered.
“Very well. Do you know how long the Dempos have been living underground?” Lyn and CB shook their heads. “By their records, several thousands of years, more than us, more than anyone or anything else on this planet. They have the power to mutate their bodies to suit themselves. They call it “changing”, but that’s a rough translation of what it really means in their language. Anyway, my team and I were excavating in the area. Back then they found a big chunk of gold and the company I was working for just happened to be in the business of finding gold, and making a quite of a large profit out of doing so. My team and I, along with three other teams, were tasked to dig up an area about the same size as three football fields, maybe more.”

“We dug for days and weeks, finding very little. Then one extremely hot day John, a member of my team, was planting sticks of dynamite into a hole. As the supervisor, I watched him put one in there and then wipe the sweat off his head using the back of his arm. Then he went to put the next one in and he said ‘it is gone!’ to which I replied, ‘what’s gone?’ and he said back to me ‘the bloody stick of dynamite’. I sighed and said to him ‘put another one in’. He mocked my sigh and then put another stick in. We heard a hissing noise and we immediately knew it was the dynamite. The ground beneath John’s feet fell in and he fell down the hole. He didn’t scream or anything. The dynamite continued to hiss and I grabbed my hat and ran away quickly.”

“The dynamite continued to hiss for a few more seconds, knowing I didn’t have much time left I threw myself face down on the ground and I could hear something beneath me. But I couldn’t figure out what it was. It sounded like footsteps, but I passed it off as the heat getting to me. The dynamite exploded sending dust and dirt into the air and I got up and brushed myself off. I headed back to the camp.”

“It seemed quite obvious that John was either dead, or dying, underneath all that rubble. So I went to my boss’s office, knocked on his door and told him the bad news. He said ‘What was that explosion?’ I told him the story of John and the dynamite and that the chances of John surviving such a blast would be very minimal. I cried for a long time in that office and then I walk out of the office, and John is walking up to the office. ‘What the…’ I begin ‘We need to talk’ John cuts in mid-sentence on me.”

“We sit down in the boss’s office and talk about what happened. John says he didn’t just fall through the earth. He was pulled through the ground. He says there are people living underground, hundreds of them. They all looked scary at first but they forced something down his throat, and he talked with them for a while. They were called Dempos.” Lyn and CB stirred at this word, “You know them, I know you know them, we all do. Anyway, John said he would take me and the boss back to the Dempos. We did that, we talked with them for a while and they agreed that they would not interfere with our operation as long as we gave them ample time to move out. We agreed on this and we went on our way.”

“Two weeks after that night we had security patrolling the excavation site, people were stealing dynamite from us. Supposedly one of the Dempos’ children got lost and was wandering around the excavation site. Security shouted at the Dempos child to stop. Of course, they didn’t know it was a Dempos. Only we did, and we weren’t on site. And, they shot the child. One of the Dempos’ crawled out of the hole after the shot, it was the child’s mother. The guards ran towards it but it leapt out of the hole and killed them both. John filled in on security that night, one of the guys was off sick and he saw the whole incident, that’s the only way we knew what truly happened. He told us the whole thing.”

“Then a few days later a Dempos leader comes up to us and speaks to us. ‘you have interfered. Your kind shall no longer inherit this earth.’ He walked away and stepped back into the hole. That night we upped the security on the site but somehow someone managed to slip by and leave two babies on the doorstep to the Boss’s office. A note was left, written in very scrawly English ‘we will not harm these two. When they grow up, tell them the story of how this came to be, John.’

The man sighed and a tear came to his eye.
“Even now I have been lying to you. For that I am sorry. It is time for the truth. I am John, and I fathered the first ever Dempos-Human babies.”

“So, as you can see by that extremely lengthy tale of how you two were brought into the world…”

Lyn broke in mid-monologue, “I thought the human birth duration is 9 months.”

“It is.” Said John. “but the Dempos duration is only 9 days, as I found out very quickly. But she was human, at least looked it. They left us in a room together and we got talking and… it just happened. Afterwards she turned back into one of them and just walked away.”

“I took you to the nearest hospital I could find, and left you two there. I do not know the rest of the story, you do though. You are twins.”

“That is the story of how I came to be your father. Now I must decide how it is you will die.”
