This story was "inspired" by an incident at TAFE.

A client called me in and told me that a computer on their network wasn’t connecting. Lucky for me it was only a ten minute drive. I grabbed my morning coffee, and then another one, and prepared to go there. I armed myself with my laptop and tool case and set off.

I arrived there to be greeted by the pretty receptionist and she showed me the computer that wasn’t working. I took out the screwdriver from my tool case and unscrewed the case of the computer. I realized immediately that the network card was not screwed in, and because of not being screwed it was knocked slightly out of the socket. I pushed it back into its socket and even screwed it in for them.

I booted the computer up and try to connect to their network. It didn’t work. So I checked the network cable and network settings and they seemed alright to me. I saw a piece of paper on a shelf above me with the correct details for the network. These were not what were on the computer. I tried to change them but they said I needed administrative rights, which I didn’t have.

I unpacked my laptop and set it up next to the computer and borrowed the network cable. I typed in the right settings and it worked. I browsed their network, making sure that it was really working.

Suddenly a guy bursts into the room
“Hi, the name’s Brian. I work for the IT Services Department. Can you please let me fix this computer?” He says.
“Sure but…” I begin.
“No, I’m sure what’s wrong with it. It’ll only take a minute.”
“I have…” I begin again, trying to tell him I have the network cable that should have been in the computer.

I notice his password is “brian2” so I memorise it for later use. It takes him about ten minutes but his bulging blood vessel in his neck somehow stops from bursting (thank God, this suit was just drycleaned) and he eventually storms out of the room in the same fashion he entered in.

I log back onto the computer and enter his username and password and sure enough I now have the powers of an Administrator. My first stop is to change his password. I change it to something ambiguous like “passwordd”, something an idiot like him would never guess. Then I modify a few random settings on the computer, like adding an account under my name with my own password as an administrator and changing his account to a standard pleb user. Doesn’t Windows have great security measures?

I pack up my tools and then walk out of the room, he brushes past me in his hurried way. I talk with the pretty receptionist for a little while and mention something about if she ever needed me this is my number, call anytime…

The door is just about to close behind me and I hear an “ARRGGGHHHHH” which signals the fact that my work is done here.

The phone rings. I roll over to check the time, only 7:30 in the morning. I’ll wring the neck of the /censored.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(cens)\' /> who’s calling me if and/or when I find out who it is.

I climb out of bed and look for my new phone. I still haven’t gotten used to the new ringtone from when my last phone had a nasty encounter with the pavement. I find it spinning slowly around on the floor. I flip it open and try to focus on the number. The word “boss” slowly comes into focus and I answer the phone.
“Yello?”
“This is your wake up call!” My boss nearly shouts through the phone.
“Sorry, I think you’ve got the wrong number.” I say, still half-asleep.
“No! Wait! I have a very special announcement for you today!”
“You’re not one of those telemarketers are you?”
“No, not at all. I’m your boss, remember me?”
I mumble into the phone.
“Alright, well my offer today is that I’m going to send you away! You won’t work today at all!” He speaks an offer too good to be true, because it is.
“What’s the catch?” I ask.
“Well, you’ll spend only 4 hours…”, he says it like it’s a good thing, “learning how to use our new helpdesk software at a conference!” He continues being optimistic.
”Why?”
“Well, this new software is VERY complicated..”, this coming from a person who doesn’t know how to Mail Merge, “but its features are excellent!”
“Mhm, so where is it and when do I need to be there?” I regret answering the phone now.
“Well it’s at 8…”
A long silence begins.
“Ok. Where is it?” He says the address and I note it down. “Do I get paid?” I ask him.
“Of course not! Have fun!” He hangs up before I can reply.

I get dressed and jump into the car and drive to the conference.

Greeted by another pretty receptionist who shows me the way to the conference area. Everyone’s already seated behind computers and some pretentious guy is already standing up at the dais boasting about how the helpdesk software is so user friendly. He says his name is John Idon and identifies himself as the CEO of IdonSoft.

He directs people to go to an intranet site so I reluctantly sit down and follow his instructions.

“Alright, at the moment you’re on the intranet site. It has a few links.” I spot an admin link and I click on it. It asks for a username and a password. I try entering John Idon with the password of “password” but that doesn’t work. I enter IdonJ and that username works but the password of “password” doesn’t work. I think for a little while, listening to his speech and he keeps repeating his company’s name. So I try that. It works. I’m in. I find bank account details and also find out that John is sitting on a little cash. I think of a devilish plan and execute it. I remotely log into my Boss’s computer, using a remote control program I installed on it so I could help him out whenever needed and I transfer a large proportion of John’s cash to my boss’s bank account using his computer and phone up John’s bank. I wait and wait for an operator and finally one comes on the line.

“Hi, this is John Idon’s personal assistant, he is in a meeting at the moment but he has only just realized that a large amount of his bank account money has gone missing, could you please look into it for me?”
“Sure.”, says the operator and after a few more minutes. “Ok, this money has gone to a person named…” and the operator gives me the name. “Unfortunately I cannot recover that money.”
I fake a gasp.
“I know him!” and I hang up. My next phone call is to the police.
“Hi, this is John Idon of IdonSoft’s secretary. A large amount of money has been moved from my Boss’s account to…” and I give my boss’s name. “account. I just got off the phone with the bank…”
“Alright, we’ll look into it.” The police operator says.

I sit through the conference, biding my time and then during the lunch break I’m interrupted by another phone call from my boss.

“Hey it’s me. The cops just seized my computer and I’m ringing you from the station. If you could come and bail me out… this is such a big mistake.”
“Slow down”, I say. “What happened?”
“Well they heard from an anonymous source that I hacked into John Idon’s bank account.”
“And did you?”
“Of course not! But now his money is in my account and they’re charging me for it! You’re the boss until I get out of here.”
“Oh.. I wasn’t expecting that.” I lie. “Thanks, I guess. I’ll do what I can to get you out.” I lie again.

I walk out of the conference as the new boss of my company.
