Quasar is the digital equivalent of the keen photographer's long-time favourite glass filter - the starburst. The traditional starburst filter consists of a clear glass plate with a series of fine lines cut into its surface; attached to the front of the camera's lens, this adds a star-shaped diffraction pattern to any bright highlights. Of course, this means that the starburst effect is created at the time the image is captured, and experience is needed to judge the final result. The stars can usually be rotated, by rotating the filter itself, but the number of points is fixed and the final colouring of the stars can't be controlled. And good quality glass filters can be quite expensive, even more so when you consider that each filter can produce only one type of effect. With starburst filters, for example, if you want to be able to produce stars with either 6 points or 8 points, then you need to buy two filters.
Not so with Quasar!
With Quasar, you can add starbursts to any image; the stars' shapes and sizes can be controlled easily, and stars can have from one to one hundred points; the colours can be controlled precisely... check out the feature-list below!

Dynamic Colour Translation
A single plug-in for use with Photoshop compatible host applications. It is based on a kind of ultra-violet and fluorescent style colour shift but also offers many other variations for interesting and unusual results.

Infrared Colour A 'False Colour' infrared film uses one of the three colour separations on a film carrier (usually the red one) to render the infrared information, using the two remaining ones for the normal colour information. This leads to some unusual effects with objects that give off a lot of infrared light (especially foliage) being depicted in red and skys becoming a deep blue. For our simulator we used Kodak Ektachrome Infrared Film as our example.

Who hasn't come across pictures which suffer from a too high a contrast. Our AntiContrast filter was created by the author because of his own need to correct these images, both personal and for his work.
Normal contrast filters work by flattening out the tonal values overall. The AntiContrast filter works by progressively multiplying or dividing each individual pixel. It does not just lighen or darken the image. With the filter controls you can individually adjust the filter's effect on both the light and dark areas of an image.
Used sparingly it can be used to reduce the contrast in images taken in bright sunlight for example. Used at the more extreme settings the filter can pick out detail in dark or bleached out areas of an image.
ENHANCER
Our Enhancer plug-in has two separate filters. Sharp/Smooth will smooth parts of your image and at the same time, hold or sharpen the detail areas. The controls allow you to either sharpen just the detail areas, smooth just the non-detail, or both. The 'Sharp Edge Width' control adjusts the amount of detail to be retained. Highlighter uses a combination of subtle light and/or dark edge highlights to bring out and enhance the image detail.
ISOLATED COLOURS
All three filters in this package allow you to manipulate individual colours within the image.
Add Colour With this filter you can add up to six separate colours to a greyscaled image, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. Threshold sliders allow you to control the amount of each colour. A depth control is also included to enhance the effect.
Colour Boost This filter allows you boost individual colours within the picture, so you can brighten that dull looking sky, bring out that models red lips, or make a certain object more prominent. The twelve individual colour controls are for red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. The depth control will hide any 'false, stuck-on look' to the result.
RGB Remover Does what it says! Working on the alpha channel you can remove any one or all red, green and blue colours from the image, leaving the area transparent. The filter also includes controls for removing highlights and/or shadows as well.
COLOUR TONER
These four individual filters were compiled as a quick, no frills, way of applying some basic single-colour effects to an image. The monotone filter renders the greyscale image in a single colour. The duotone combines the colour with the greyscale. The two tinted glass filters apply the single colour over either a greyscale or full colour image.
The colour can be obtained by either adjusting the individual RGB sliders or typing in the values directly - the resulting colour is shown in the small preview. Also shown for reference is the hexadecimal value for that colour.
TRI-TONER
A versatile little filter to easily add rich colours and brighten up the even the most boring colour or greyscale images. Easily apply complementary, wild, corporate company or even your favourite football team colour combinations. With the two sets of RGB sliders and colour previews you can accurately control the colour of both the middle and light tones. The Tri-troner comes with 15 preset examples.
MULTI-TONER
A filter to liven up black & white or dull colour pictures. The Multitoner consists of three separate filters. The Pastel Tone filter applies a multi-coloured tone to the greyscale version of the image. The Glass Tint [colour] and Glass Tint [mono] filters apply a multi-coloured tint over either a colour or greyscale version of the image. Both the pattern and colours of the multi-coloured tone overlay can be altered to obtain the best result. The contrast control when used will force the overlay to interact with the image creating some strong colourful results.
VIGNETTE PLUS
Ten different elliptical vignette styles in one handy filter. These include the standard fade to solid colour, a colour tinted edge, colour noise, a coloured glow effect, fade to greyscale, scattered image pixels, a frosty blur, spotlight with darkened edges and highlighted center, a hard rough edge and of course alpha channel fade to transparent. Our Enhancer plug-in has two separate filters. Sharp/Smooth will smooth parts of your image and at the same time, hold or sharpen the detail areas. The controls allow you to either sharpen just the detail areas, smooth just the non-detail, or both. The 'Sharp Edge Width' control adjusts the amount of detail to be retained. Highlighter uses a combination of subtle light and/or dark edge highlights to bring out and enhance the image detail.
ISOLATED COLOURS
All three filters in this package allow you to manipulate individual colours within the image.
Add Colour With this filter you can add up to six separate colours to a greyscaled image, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. Threshold sliders allow you to control the amount of each colour. A depth control is also included to enhance the effect.
Colour Boost This filter allows you boost individual colours within the picture, so you can brighten that dull looking sky, bring out that models red lips, or make a certain object more prominent. The twelve individual colour controls are for red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. The depth control will hide any 'false, stuck-on look' to the result.
RGB Remover Does what it says! Working on the alpha channel you can remove any one or all red, green and blue colours from the image, leaving the area transparent. The filter also includes controls for removing highlights and/or shadows as well.
COLOUR TONER
These four individual filters were compiled as a quick, no frills, way of applying some basic single-colour effects to an image. The monotone filter renders the greyscale image in a single colour. The duotone combines the colour with the greyscale. The two tinted glass filters apply the single colour over either a greyscale or full colour image.
The colour can be obtained by either adjusting the individual RGB sliders or typing in the values directly - the resulting colour is shown in the small preview. Also shown for reference is the hexadecimal value for that colour.
TRI-TONER
A versatile little filter to easily add rich colours and brighten up the even the most boring colour or greyscale images. Easily apply complementary, wild, corporate company or even your favourite football team colour combinations. With the two sets of RGB sliders and colour previews you can accurately control the colour of both the middle and light tones. The Tri-troner comes with 15 preset examples.
MULTI-TONER
A filter to liven up black & white or dull colour pictures. The Multitoner consists of three separate filters. The Pastel Tone filter applies a multi-coloured tone to the greyscale version of the image. The Glass Tint [colour] and Glass Tint [mono] filters apply a multi-coloured tint over either a colour or greyscale version of the image. Both the pattern and colours of the multi-coloured tone overlay can be altered to obtain the best result. The contrast control when used will force the overlay to interact with the image creating some strong colourful results.
VIGNETTE PLUS
Ten different elliptical vignette styles in one handy filter. These include the standard fade to solid colour, a colour tinted edge, colour noise, a coloured glow effect, fade to greyscale, scattered image pixels, a frosty blur, spotlight with darkened edges and highlighted center, a hard rough edge and of course alpha channel fade to transparent. Vignette size and fade amount are fully adjustable.
