Okay - I am now stuck on the comments feature. Would it be possible to make them like mini-threads? And can those who reply to that thread subscribe to that conversation? No notification needs to be sent to the page owner of subscriptions - that's just more stuff to remove from our notifications, which means more pointless time spent. Of course there also needs to be an unsubscribe option should the conversation come to an end. The only notification needed is of any new replies.
Edit to add Orby, because I didn't see Marko's reply.

Were you serious about using it? If you were I might give a go at updating it.

Of course I am - Orby's cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute <img src=\'
http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... iggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
He started off as the icon for our Users section on the index page, then Josh made him a whole character. <img src=\'
http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... iggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
He just needs some different expressions, and stuff - like - he can be on a 404 error page, or a construction page, or a 403 forbidden page....

Lots to comment on, need to re-read before I add more.
I think the phoenix should stay on KN, but Orby could be more of this project icon. Don't want to make it look to much like dA's though. Still need a name as well....
Josh's comment idea looks good, and workable. Nested comments would be a bit harder I think, not sure.
We'll look into the fullview thing a bit when we have examples. I would rather prefer the AJAX than to people automatically seeing a full image when they load the page. This could all be optional though.
What about a dashboard like the My Assistant in IPB?

Orby is eh.... weird. if we add something like that, we might as well call ourselves the "DA rip off". This thing needs to look NOTHING like DA and hold none of it's features constant as far as names goes and layouts....
This project reminds me of when MSN closed its doors to free chats. People went everywhere and starts making MSN look-a-like stuff. This shouldn't be what we are doing at all.... should it?\

I really think we should look at the collapsible comments thing. first time you come to the page, it's all expanded, next time all that was on the page the first time is collapsed, only new threads are expanded. Again I like a "reply to John Smith" button, and it posts as just a regular comment but with "in responce to John smith's comenent #1" and of course comment #1 is a link. We could also have the "converstation feature, that would pull all the comments between those two people on that item... which would open in a new window or something. Facebook is the master of comments I think we should look more on facebook for their commenting structure.
Scott, the only issue with people seeing a thumbnail is that if they are on subscription, they already have seen that thumbnail on the page that says which new artwork is available. taking them to a page that showed the same thing would be a bit irritating.... I didn't get that until lastnight. So what I think is that we use the Ajax thing on non-subs, and have the comment box on the ajax window. For subs, they see the full image, but to keep it good looking and easy to do stuff, make the comment box moveable just incase the picture is really long or something... or they are looking deep into one section of the picture. We could call it the critique box instead of the comment box... clicking the link on top the comment box grays the comment box and opens the ajax critique box that you can move anywhere on the page....
Thinking about critiques, could we have a check box that says this comment is an advanced critique. That would make the comment stand out in some way with color or something, or sorted before all the other comments... ? another suggestion <img src=\'

What I was thinking about with images is something like this. Someone uploads a massive file, my example here is 1280 x 651 - not going to fit on many monitors without scrolling. Go here, the 3rd image in the top row is that size. You see a thumb here. This is as either subs or non would see somewhere around the place. Click on that image (Abell 266....). You now see it larger than the thumb, but this is still not full size. This is where people would add comments/favs/whatever. To get full size, you click on it again. This is where the AJAX would come in, to prevent people having to open a popup etc.
Obviously, if it's small enough then we'd display the full size on the middle screen. Not reason we can't still have the popup. The limit for showing a second preview could be user defined, defaulting to about 750px, I'd think.

dA is not the only site around which has an icon/mascot. We've had Orby for quite sometime, he's just not been called into service other than on DSL's marketing materials and the odd appearance on the forum. Besides Orby has marketing value - and we can get a fullsize mascot costume made of him.
Once we figure out a name, we will have to design a logo around it, but Orby can still be our mascot.
It seems (to me anyway) that the comment system is getting kind of complicated. I would like to keep it simple and un-nested.

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45622809/ that's a dA CSS Modification that someone made for user pages if any of you are interested in looking.
I am not trying to be just like dA, but it is pretty decent for at least a sample roadmap. I belong to other photography sites, one is incredibly confusing, another isn't too bad.
Seeing as I have absolutely no plans for the day unless the sky changes from hazy clouds to fluffy ones and unless I decide to do some housework, I'll be around to drive you all crazy <img src=\'

I want Orby peeking from the left like I talked to you about a long time ago :PTheArtRelmmeh.. I suck at naming things. Our site has to be the best - no let downs. I would like to hear from more people that use DA. right now it's just 3 of us I think, and I'm a major slacker when it comes to dA lol. That site proves that we gotta get going on this.... any idea when we can have good mockups? We need someone designing these with what we have said thus far (Josh?) and then we can submit edits. Maybe we can do some of this during the weekend, and maybe Scott can get started on a platform that this thing will run on... I know there are tons of setups to be done. I'm ready to give money to NS so he can get the flippin internet already..... I know we need him... I have 40 bucks lol.

Some of the input so far from dA users:
Easy registration process
Easy gallery access
No mature content or artistic nudes. (and that is from an adult male)
Simple navigation and simplicity in use of the site in general
I was pondering on making a passworded forum so that those from dA who know what we're building and will be some of our beta testers can have some input and discussion as the site is developed. Thoughts on that?
Edit: Forgot to reply to Jim's link
That format may work, it just looks kind of untidy to me.

Oh....hmmm....I dunno - it doesn't jump out at me and say "this is it" ....
edit to add:
I guess the section wouldn't need to be passworded, could just make a "betatester" user group ... dur....

Slashdot comments are the root of all evil. Or is that just me?
Yes to beta testing forum, etc. Could split this topic perhaps, depending on what posts are about.
Theartgallery.com is taken...
