I have six pairs of white socks and six pairs of blue socks in my drawer. In complete darkness, how many socks must I take from the drawer in order to be sure I get a pair that match?

how about three?
The first two could be different colors, but if that\'s the case the third one MUST match one of the two colors.
Is that correct?

Okay, well assuming that is correct (my apologies if there\'s some trick part of the question I\'m missing), I\'ll put up another one:
There are seven coins which look identical. One of the seven coins weighs slightly less than the other six. Using a balance scale, how could you determine which is the light coin in just two weighings?

my guess is:
put 3 on each side of the scale (obviously one left out)
if at this stage they balance out, then the one left out is the lightest...
if one side topples, whichever side is the lightest (obviously the one which is above the other)
take 2 coins from that side (2 of the three coins), and put them on opposite ends of the scale
if the scales balance, then the one you left out of this last weighing is the lightest...
if they tip, then the lightest (highest) is your lightest
