Introducing our first ever artists event, and a chance for your work to appear on the cover of an upcoming Penguin novel
We're very proud to announce Hearts and Minds, Creativity's inaugural artists event, to be held on September 25, 2008. Hearts and Minds will be our annual celebration of the accomplished fine artists, designers and illustrators who inspire our industry and propel it, exploring and showcasing the creative genius of some of the top talents straddling the worlds of fine arts and commercial enterprise, whose work ultimately transcends preconceived boundaries of creative expression, in any arena.
We are honored to have Will Gompertz, director of media at the Tate, as the keynote speaker of Hearts and Minds. He will be accompanied by an impressive lineup of established and rising art scene stars, who will present and display some of their best work at the event. Additional speakers and a full lineup of artist participants and schedule for the day will be announced soon; for now, save the date, September 25, and read on about a chance to design the cover for a forthcoming Penguin title.
Creativity/Penguin Talent Competition: Submit Your Art!
As part of this year's festivities, there will be a talent competition in conjunction with Penguin Books. Under the creative direction of VP/executive art director Paul Buckley, Penguin has become one of the most talked about creative forums for artists today, and was patron to the award-winning Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions, which tapped talents like Frank Miller, Roz Chast, Art Spiegelman and Chris Ware to update the covers of modern classics, including Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy.
Alongside Penguin, we are inviting all artists, illustrators, designers and photographers to create a cover for British author Sam Taylor's upcoming novel The Island at the End of the World. The winner will be selected by Penguin editors, creative director Buckley and the editors of Creativity and will become the official cover of the book, to be published in 2009. The competition is open to all artists, whether you are just starting out or are an established name in the business.
Submission Details:
The final artwork should be submitted in digital form at the following specs:
Size: At least 15 3/16" wide x 23 1/4" high (or bigger, but ultimately scaleable to book cover's actual size, 5 1/16" wide x 7 3/4" high)
(For those of you on the metric system, that translates to 38.7cm x 59.1cm submission size; 12.9cm x 19.7cm actual book size)
Resolution: at least 300 dpi, at the submitted size. Or if you prefer, you can send in a low-res version for viewing and if you are a finalist, we will contact you to get the high-res version.
Who:The contest is open to all levels of talent, from all countries. We encourage those from outside the U.S. to participate.
How many:You are free to submit as many entries as you like.
Don't forget: Please also make sure to include the book title and author name as part of your design, unless their exclusion is part of your overall vision.
Book Synopsis:
A chilling novel about the near future, where most of the world has been destroyed by catastrophic floods. As a father and his three children begin to rebuild their lives alone on an island, his youngest son Finn begins to question how they arrived there and why they alone have been spared. Finn's search for understanding takes an unexpected turn when a strange man named Will swims ashore, and he appears to know quite a bit about this family and the circumstances that surrounded the floods. But Finn's father is determined to keep him silent and is willing to do anything to prevent Will from disturbing his family's idyllic life on the island. Sam Taylor's The Island at the End of the World is a riveting post-apocalyptic tale that explores the darkness that lies within the hearts of men.
Email us at heartsandminds@creativity-online.com for a transcript of the novel. Read a Q&A with Buckley about his views on the state of book cover design and what he looks for in artists.
Deadline: Friday, July 18
Along with submissions, please include your name, email address and contact phone number.
Submissions should be sent to heartsandminds@creativity-online.com
Finalists in the competition will be notified sometime during the week of August 11 and will be showcased at Hearts and Minds on September 25, where we'll also be announcing the overall winner.
