World Cup of Hockey: Intense Canada beats U.S.

MONTREAL — Martin St. Louis had a goal and an assist to lead Canada to a 2-1 victory over the United States last night in the World Cup of Hockey opener for both teams.

The fast-paced game was full of hard hitting, and featured stellar play by Canada goaltender Martin Brodeur and U.S. counterpart Robert Esche.

"They came out hungrier than we were, way more intense," U.S. coach Ron Wilson said of the Canadians.

Joe Sakic scored the second goal for Canada, which outshot the U.S. team 32-24.

Bill Guerin scored for the United States.

The heated rivalry between the teams peaked when Canada beat the United States 5-2 in the gold-medal game of the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Canada captain Mario Lemieux fought Steve Konowalchuk after the U.S. forward ran into Brodeur in the second period.

Both teams lost players to injuries, as defenseman Ed Jovanovski of the Vancouver Canucks was knocked out of Canada's lineup, and the United States was without forward Mike Modano for most of the game.

Canadian sports network TSN reported Jovanovski has a sprained knee and might be out for the rest of the tournament. He will miss at least seven days.

Sweden 5, Germany 2

Mats Sundin had a goal and two assists to lead Sweden past Germany in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sweden outshot Germany 42-19.
