Peter sharpe-the giger effect

i tried following this tutorial some time ago http://www.petersharpe.com/Tutorial31.htm but stumbeled around so much i gave up.
anyway, this time i came out with something. it looks nothing remotely like his piece, which simply could be the point of view i used and some extra steps i took.
the sky was set to black with 0 haze and no clouds. the ground plane was then deleted.
1) created a sphere
2) put a torus inside it. resized it so it looked like a tube/cone
3) put another torus in there somewhere
4) added a ball of light
5) applied a giger text effect. this was downloaded from his website. thankfully bryce in this case at least made it easy to import and use the material.
6) zoomed inside the first sphere and found an angle i liked by messing around with point of views. the first sphere was at least three times as large as anything inside of it so that it created a background for the other pieces inside. the whole "secret" to this tutorial peter sharpe says is to view the sphere from the inside. i added extra shapes within that because the end result had too many fine lines and things happening. the softened it slightly in my opinion.
7) render
8) see what you guys think
its almost like theres a face to the left of it, this happened purely by accident and i am quite pleased with it. to the right you can see the clearly defined edges of the second torus i put inside the piece. i would have changed my field of view but i didnt want to loose the face that appeared to have been created. so i may crop this out later on, who knows?!
