The big red button on the wall in this data center is clearly labeled
\"emergency shutdown.\" But coming out of the top of the mounting box is
an 8-in. piece of steel conduit with three unconnected wires sticking
out. \"One worker wondered why the button was still here if it wasn\'t
connected,\" reports a pilot fish on the scene. \"He figured, \'It can\'t
still work, can it? Let\'s see.\' He shut down the entire state
government network at 10 a.m. on payroll processing day with one push
of the big red button.\"
This would have to be my favourite darwin award:

(29 January 2003, Brazil) At work, Manoel Messias Batista Coelho was responsible for cleaning out the storage tanks of gasoline tanker trucks. He had been employed in that capacity for two months when he ran afoul of fuel.

The 35-year-old began to fill a tanker with water, a standard safety procedure that forces flammable vapor out of the container. He returned an hour later to check whether the water level was high enough to proceed. But he had trouble deciding, because it was so DARK inside the tanker.

A resourceful employee, Manoel forgot the very reason why he was filling the tank with water when he lit a cigarette lighter to shed some light on the situation. His little test successfully determined that the water level was NOT yet high enough for safety. The vapor explosion launched him through the air, and he landed in the company parking lot 100 meters away.

Manoel suffered severe burns, blunt force trauma, and an injury to the head that exposed his brain. Our witless car washer had learned his terminal lesson in safety by the time the firemen arrived.

Goof puts man in major poker tourney

KILLEEN, Texas — A computer goof has Robert Guinther headed for a seat at the World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas later this week.

Guinther, 65, entered what he thought was a $10 (U.S.) on-line poker tournament, but midway through he realized that he had accidentally clicked on a World Series of Poker satellite tournament with a $100 entry fee and it was too late to back out. He went on to win, defeating 180 other competitors and earning a spot in the WSOP $10,000 no-limit championship.

The tournament, which begins Thursday, will involve more than 6,600 players who either qualified by winning a satellite tournament or paid the $10,000 entry fee.

\"This is the dream of a lifetime,\" Guinther said. \"I watch these guys on television all the time, and I\'m excited about the chance to sit down and play with them.\"

Guinther\'s son, Rik, kept tabs on his father\'s progress from his home computer in San Antonio and had to explain just what the victory meant.

\"When I won, I let out a big Yes!\" Guinther said. \"I just thought I had won $11,000, but then my son told me over the phone, \'Dad, you\'ve just won a seat in the World Series of Poker!\' I screamed so loud, you wouldn\'t believe it.\"

Guinther, who settled in Killeen after retiring as an Army sergeant first class in 1985, says he\'s a little nervous about the next step but knows he\'ll be fine once play begins.

Seeing right through the prank

Associated Press

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Arthur Richardson thought he\'d pull a prank and pretend to swallow a friend\'s truck key. Unfortunately, Wednesday\'s prank backfired when Richardson plopped the key in his mouth and gravity took over.

Richardson went to a doctor Thursday, who X-rayed his stomach and got a clear picture of the key. The doctor said the key posed no danger, but Richardson\'s friend needed to use his truck.

So Richardson and his friend took the X-rays to a locksmith, who used the pictures to fashion a new key. And it worked in the truck.

John Somers, owner of Al\'s Lock and Safe, said he\'d never made a key before from the image of an X-ray.

\"I have done all sorts of lock work, I\'ve done all sorts of safe work,\" Somers said. \"This is truly a first in my career.\"

Somers said he didn\'t have any immediate plans to set price rates for X-ray keys, but it\'s something he might consider.
