Matsushita Electic Industrial Co., Ltd, better known as the Panasonic brand to you and I, have announced the worlds first dual layer single sided Blu-Ray disc recorder. With a capacity of 50 gigabytes, the new format is a potential replacement to current generation DVD discs.
Aimed at recording the increasingly popular HDTV (High Definition TV) video without a loss of quality, one disc should be able to store around 4 and a half hours of HDTV quality video. It can also store a massive 63 hours of conventional analogue video.
The new model, the DMR-E700BD, is part of the DIGA DVD recorder series from Panasonic, and naturally falls into the high end category. It is equipped with tuners for digital broadcasting, Broadcast Satellite, Communications Satellite and analog broadcasting, so it\'s pretty much ready for everything you throw at it.
Mr. Etsuji Shuda, Director of the Home AV Business Unit of Panasonic AVC Networks Company said:
As digital broadcasting services are expanding, demand for recording and storing HD video is increasing. Our new product responds to such a demand. We believe the upcoming Olympic Summer Games in Athens is one of the factors behind the expanding demands. The new model records superb digital HD video without compromising picture quality.
It\'ll certainly be interesting to see which standard replaces DVD in the medium to long term, but we feel that we should be safe to continue buying our dvds for at least the next couple of years.
