I think this is something we should take a serious look at; even though there are lots of free mail servers out there, there are people willing to pay for good email hosting, especially for companies. The only thing is we\'d have to enable the ability to reply from software like Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc. Is there any way that send limits could be set to prevent spammers?

For the most part, because of security, only 127.0.0.1 is allowed to send mail through the server\'s SMTP (the new server)... so they would still have to use their ISP\'s outgoing mailserver...

Mail hosting could theoretically be a money maker as some people don\'t like using hotmail or gmail or netscape mail etc. Something to ponder.

I think you misunderstood. It will make no change to webmail that I have SMTP blocked... since the mail originates from 127.0.0.1... the lock will only affect those who use outlook or outlook express (or another third-party program). Changing \'reply-to\' settings won\'t do anything but adjust what address an email reply would go to. They would not be able to use mail.domain.com as their outgoing mailserver in the account settings for the third-party programs.
As for skinning Horde, I wouldn\'t bother, since it would have to be reskinned everytime CPanel updated... same with adding plugins to Squirrelmail... it\'s all overwritten when the new CPanel is downloaded and installed. And Neomail is being phased out, so I disabled it... no reason for people to get attached to something that won\'t work in the next few weeks.

No, I knew what you meant, it\'s the same as what we have to do now; for the email I need to reply to from a KN/KG etc or CauldronCrafts email I have to sign into the different email addresses in order to reply from the right email address.

By altering the reply address in Outlook Express it means that if the person has to reply to me again then they see the domain email but it doesn\'t change the \"from\" email coming from the ISP mailserver.

I guess I am going to have to go out and pay for some advertising for KH as we don\'t exactly have people beating down the door for hosting accounts.

Why block people from sending mail from their pc\'s via outlook/thunderbird and etc? Granted i see what ada is trying to do, but with all this free emails, like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and etc, i doubt people will want to pay for email, even if its for companys, but maybe we can do something like [url=\"http://datapimp.com/\"]DataPimp[/url] offer a email redirect, like instead of having us3rX@killamail.com, the can pick something custom like, us3rX@pwnsjo0.com or something... lol <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

why not offer free email, then have the paided part for;

Jeremy, yyou\'re misreading. They are not blocked from sending mail from OE/Thunderbird/whatever. They are blocked from using our SMTP server to send mail.

And as for the \'extras\'... we would have no way to control what attachment size a person is allowed, or how much control they could have over their mailbox. With the mail servers we use, it\'s an all or nothing system. About all we could change is how much space they would have available... or the redirect.

So if i make oe/tb/etc connect to the server to get mail, thats fine,
but if i want send mail from oe/tb/etc via the server i cant?

Right. SMTP is blocked. You would need to use the SMTP server that your ISP supplies.
This will keep the server off spam lists, and thereby keep it from getting unplugged and cancelled for being blacklisted on RBL lists.
The above is also why I removed formmail.cgi from the server\'s \'Scripts\' section.

The thing is not all ISPs give out SMTP to its users. Those who don\'t will want to use their hosting provider to send mail.

People can easily use the mail() function in PHP to send spam mail if they wanted to. I think turning the entire thing off to block the minority of customers is a bit of a shame to those who would use it for legitimate purposes...which would likely be the majority of our customers.

If you want it re-enabled, I\'ll do it.
But just make sure you\'re aware that Ev1 doesn\'t issue warnings when their servers are blacklisted by RBLs... about the only one they are accepting of is AOL... any other RBL, and the server, as well as the account, are terminated. No backup, no second chance. Poof, gone.
Hence, the added security.

That\'s why I asked what types of send limit controls there are available; I realize the risks in hosting email accounts and it\'s something I want to weigh very carefully. We know that our own sites wouldn\'t be sending spam (well, except for that little 17 110 confirm your submission emails that got sent to gren by the joke script problem.) The bottom line is I am looking for ways to bring in some money and I guess advertising is going to be the way to go-both buying some and selling some-as we still don\'t have enough material online to justify a business expansion grant...and \'round and \'round it goes. *sigh*

Found [url=\"http://www.rvskin.com/index.php?page=public/antispam\"]this[/url] earlier on, looks like quite a popular tutorial. I\'d be happy to go through this if we decide to enable SMTP.

That\'s already been set up (except the dictionary attack prevention, but there is a better one)... but that only scans incoming mail. It would not do anything to prevent someone from using our SMTP to spam and get the server blacklisted.
