When most website designers look for a book, they aim to get a book which offers them something different. The www. series are what I would consider something a little bit different and special... why? The books in the w3 (www.) series aim not to focus on the actual coding standards but showcase examples where the code has been put into action, therefore showing you the reasoning why you should use certain methods to design your website. WWW.Type is a book which entirely focuses on typography; this covers everything from using fonts, using typefaces in flash animation and gif animation to the colours you should use. As well as providing an in-depth guide to the advantages and disadvantages of using certain typefaces this book offers you a showcase of several websites using them in their own designs and the book highlights and explains not only how they were implemented but also why they work so well. For those of you who do not like tonnes of text and theory this book is something which you will always want on your shelf. It really is remarkable what one small book can cover in such detail yet through using images and graphically represented websites, it does this using a "this is why they used this font, can you see why this works so well" styled format. This book is aimed primarily at designers who are branching out into website design or for website developers who wish to branch into web design as it explains the theory behind typography as well as showing its implementation and the "rules" of usage.
The chapters of the book include the following... The first chapter discusses how and why text is implemented into websites including details of how the web interprets typefaces. Chapter two concentrates on the rules of using text, how animation and other factors affect how text is presented and the basics of implementing styled text into your documents. Chapter three is a showcase of websites in action in which the book examines the use of typography and showcases what websites are useful for looking at the ways in which typography can be used in everyday website design. Chapter four is a showcase of websites which are full of design mistakes; these are implemented by showing you what you should never do when using typefaces in website design. The final two chapters concentrate on a reference and glossary of terms and the use of colour (for those wishing to understand the mechanics of colour on the internet).
