their registration system doesnt work properly (it keeps saying... your request could not be processed, try again later)

the software has no installer which is very bad for something which uses the registry tonnes.

and the program is very buggy... it bottlenecks my resources (and i have 2gb ram) which makes the system lock up and crash n burn)

i would advise against using this "free" version... its not free at all, they want personal info, their software isnt overly stable (ive got bryce 4 which ironically has none of the bugs but the same stuff in it) and its missing stuff which it needs... what kind of sick people remove the installer on a free version???

Mine had an installer which worked fine, and I didnt have any problems with registering my copy either, nor have I had any problems with it locking up my PC and Im only using 512mb of RAM, sure it slows my PC laptop down abit, but then most 3D modeling packages are pretty power hungry, heck even Photoshop slows me down sometimes when Im working with large images. The only personal information that I was asked for was my name when when I registered my porduct which is something just about every package Ive ever used has asked me. I didnt get asked for any address, post code or even my email address.

As for the installer, well I saw one, and guess what, I used it to instal the software. In the ZIP folder go into the folder "Bryce5FreeVersion" and then click "Bryce5.exe", worked fine for me.

I still say that this is a good opertunity for people to get their hands on some software that can be used as a good starting point in 3D modeling. Im not sure what problems Alexander has had, but Ive not had any so far. It seems to be the same Bryce Ive used before so I'm sticking with it.

it should be noted that extracting files from a zipped folder is NOT an installer and should not be activly promoted as one.

also the problems ive experienced were due to the registration system in the Bryce GUI where the bottleneck was occuring.

Self-extracters are installers.... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> They work perfect for a lot of programs /bigwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

Ditto. Running the .exe file starts the instalation process, whether its self extracting or not means its still an installer, but what does it even matter. As with most things its just another way of achiveing the same goal. Alexander, if you find Bryce 4 better for yourself then thats fine, stick with it, dont forget though, Bryce 4 isnt free and Im sure that most people would rather have a free working version of a later program, than paying for an out dated one.

Bryce 4 was free for me... DVD Covermount for PC Pro magazine /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

and actually a zip file is a compressed archive, a setup program or self extractor is determined by it being compressed into an executable format or MSI installer. What josh and you are referring to is a "checkout" which many zip utilities do not offer as a function.
