The short explanation:

because almost all myths consider the stars to be representative of the souls of those who have died (Osiris is one example) which is why many constellations are named after ancient gods or demi-gods. It was an honour to venture to the stars after death, and many civilizations partook in elaborate ceremonies and burials to augment their dead relatives\' passing to \"heaven\" or Valhalla, or whatever else you want to call it. Even Draco in Dragonheart wanted to get to the stars, if you recall the end of the movie.

Hell is down again because of myths. The Titans were held prisoner in the caves of Tartarus, deep in the earth. Hades also dwelled underground, where he held Persephone captive. The fires of Chaos were in the earth, and Chaos was a bad thing to many people, and eventually became known as the fires of Hell.

Because it has a very sharp blade which displaces all the atoms and molecules and other scientific stuff that might impede its progress through through time and space.
