Kick-off! Automatic Crash Recovery

Post by Wingx »

Unattended crash detection and recovery

Kick-off provides comprehensive automatic crash detection and recovery for your USB Macintosh or PC. Kick-off monitors your system and automatically restarts when it crashes. It provides two levels of application crash detection, advanced logging, and preventive restarting capabilities. You'll sleep well at night, knowing that Kick-off is there to provide maximum availability to your server.

Kick-off detects system crashes using a combination of hardware and software. The hardware connects to your computers USB port and power cord. While your system is running normally, the software is in constant communication with the hardware. If the system crashes, this communication fails. The hardware waits for a user-specified period of time to ensure that the system is not simply busy with other tasks. After this delay, Kick-off restarts the computer by temporarily interrupting the power to the computer.

Kick-off can also monitor individual applications. One level detects crashes in all applications, and the second level can even detect non-crashing failures in many popular server applications. Kick-off receives status information from the applications themselves. Applications with this support periodically update an "application timer" in the Kick-off software. If the application fails to update this timer, Kick-off can take appropriate action.

There are three levels of crash recovery. The first level attempts to restart a specific application that has crashed. The second level attempts a "clean" restart of the computer. If both of these attempts fail, Kick-off will temporarily interrupt power to the computer causing it to restart.

Kick-off also has automatic "bookmarking" and scheduled restarts. Bookmarking automatically re-launches any applications which were running before Kick-off restarted the system. Scheduled restarts can minimize the effects of problems such as gradual memory leaks and fragmentation.

Kick-off has these great features.

- System crash detection
- Two levels of application monitoring
- Three levels of crash recovery
- Advanced logging and error notification
- Simple installation and configuration
- Automatic "bookmarking" and scheduled restarts
- USB connection
- Works with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Mac OS 8.0 or higher
