Aopen board and fast Dothan. BOM!
AOPEN'S i955GMEm-LFS motherboard is now available in both the USA and Europe and offers an alternative to taking the AMD64 or Pentium 4 route, writes Freddy Parker.
You will have to build this machine yourself, but the specs for the board are quite impressive. Additionally, you're also going to have to pay for the Dothan Pentium M chip and whatever else you want to add to it.
The Aopen board uses the 955GME chipset, built into a MicroATX form factor, supports ATA-150, has one AGP 4X slot, three PCI, two slots for DDR memory, integrated VGA, S-ATA, RAID, Gigabit LAN, 1394, and USB 2.0.
The board costs $270, which is around €250 in Europe.
I am going to use a Toshiba low profile MK1031GAS with 100GB of space and an 8MB buffer. It has some bells and whistles which make it suitable for video. I'll use the machine when I've built it as a gaming/TV system with a low profile and low noise.
Aopen boardI have ordered the fastest Dothan Pentium M that money can buy and two 512MB matched pair memory modules.
While the board is expensive, by the time I've finished building it I don't think it's going to very much more expensive than a high end system using the AMD and Intel desktop chips.
