Researchers have developed an environmentally friendly cell phone cover that's tossed into compost piles rather than trash bins. The casings will ease strain on landfills now bulging from more than 100 million handsets discarded each year, according co-developers the University of Warwick, biodegradable-plastics maker PVAXX Research & Development and No. 3 handset manufacturer Motorola. Compost is the slow metamorphosis of grass clippings, leaves, coffee grounds, kitchen remains and other vegetable matter into fertilizer.
