Image Compression For Burning

I need to know how to compress alot of image files onto one cd, as we will be starting to sell "collections" on cd (or via downloads as well). I bought a collection cd, it has 5000 photos on it <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':blink:\' /> how'd they get them all on one cd?

I copied all the cdsetup.exe files into the attachment below, with a folder to show you how they have things organized. Each category has a folder with photos in it. I didn't use the install thing on my puter, I just copied the folders to my pictures folder <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

When you run the cd, all of the folders and the stuff in the file below show up in the cd directory.

well I couldn't setup the program as it appears to be a 16 bit setup.exe that my computer just doesn't like. However, I noticed that you had 3 pics in the folder (ie. TEDDY001.JPG, TEDDY002.JPG, TEDDY003.JPG). They averaged in size at about 100 KB. That would mean that those pictures are largely compressed .jpgs. At that file size theoretically you could fit around 7000 pictures on a cd...
1000 KB = 1 MB

CD size = 700 MB = 700 000 KB

700 000 KB divided by 100 KB (avg. pic size) = 7000 pictures

okay...so how are they compressing them?

Well I'm pretty sure you already know this... but if you open any image file in Irfan View (I know this works on version 3.85 for sure) and then click "Save As" and then save as a .jpg ... a box should appear asking you to what compression you want to save it as. Of course the greater the compression the worse the quality. However, by simply dropping to 90% a file of about 400 KB will drop under 100 KB. This is what I did with the pictures that I put into the .kwp files for the Wallpaper Changer.

Did some snooping:
Image size to start with (uploaded straight from camera to computer, no editing): 637K

Resaving image from JPG to JPEG .. (the same thing really)

Quality:
Maximum (12): 1.53mb (267.72s @ 56.6Kbps)
High (8): 395.275K (69.83s @ 56.6Kbps)
Medium (5): 197.57K (34.9s @ 56.6Kbps)
Low (3): 135.93K (24.01s @ 56.6Kbps)

Very little change from Maximum to High, even medium looked fine

Seems I'm a bit late, but was going to say you can save jpg's in different levels of compression using PS. I usually use #10 (out of 12), shaves a fair amount off the size and the quality is still good.

Yeah, my default is 10; it's just all the cdsetup.exe they had on there, I didn't know what it did, so thought it might be some kind of decompression thing.
