I found this great article at the recently established CSS Library that tackles an issue that has faced us for a while. The problem is when using css float in a design - if a menu is larger than the main content then the background will not fully extend. This problem had occured on codecrypt and I beleive on killablogs (fixed using <br>). This article addresses the problem along with a number of others, and is a must read for all budding web designers:
