Idea - killalyrics

Just an idea, I was looking at the "what are you listening to" thread and thought about how much most of the members love their music; me, jer, ner0 and others with rap, quite a few with different styles of rock are just examples - perhaps a good source of income would be a lyrics site.

Pros:
- Should be easy to code
- Lots of room for advertising
- Google search for lyrics attract traffic - transfers to the rest of the network
- Another way to get members + staff even more active (perhaps a space for album reviews etc.)

Cons:
- Another project

I know we're busy now, just tossing the idea around - perhaps something for after killagaming is complete?

Ideas, Opinions, Comments, Suggestions?

Im skeptical about this. Your correct about google being great for finding lyrics for nearly any song, but advertising would really be the only way income could be gained, there are so many lyrics sites out that, all of which probably copy lyrics from the other sites, but they are all free. We couldnt charge for a service when they could get them for free elsewhere, we would have to get alot of ad clicks aswell as good indexing from search engines and a wide selection of lyrics to offer

I don't mean that you charge for lyrics - the lyrics are free and submitted by members/staff - but you charge for advertising space on the page. If the page ranks well on google then I think we can charge a flat rate per month for advertising, rather than on a per-click basis?

Hmm. It's a nice idea and all, but don't expect me to be finding lyrics to add to a db.. there are so many bands and so many songs out there it just wouldn't be worth it right now.

Agreed that it would be a great addition, but I don\'t think it\'d be a matter of \"add a few lyrics every now and then\" if we were to rival the big sites in terms of content.. so much music and it\'d be a massive job even if most the staff were in on it.. we\'d definitely need dedicated lyrics staff methinks..

We would have to also proceed with caution in regards to copywrite laws... most lyrics legally can not be reproduced without permission of the artist or management. On the other hand, many are willing to give the permission so long as the credit is also included in terms of proper ownership, but being a legitimate company we would have to be VERY careful.
Unless you mean members submitting their own lyrics, in which case it would be awful close to the poetry area and could probably be intigrated.

I like this idea, but a few things;

someone is going to have to take time to update it daily/bi-daily seeing how music is released everyday.
dont let it become like the other lyrics sites. a few ads are good, but ads all over the place is just stupid, i dont care if it brings in more money, its ugly ;\ lol

I agree with NightStorm about the copyright issues. While we wouldn\'t technically be making money from the lyrics, we would be making money because of their presence.

It would take a tremendous amount of work to be able to compete with the established sites and it would take some very dedicated staff members to work on it; the self-submitting sites are good, but I see so many of those sites with incorrect lyrics.

I\'m not saying no, we\'re not doing it, but it\'s something that will take some thought and research, to be sure.

Yeh, like I said - it's going to be a lot of work, but it's something to think about after killagaming is done.

That's true.

For now I think this idea should lay to rest. Might be a possibility in the future but right now we don't have the staff or time for it.
