U.S. firm creating video-playing tombstones

Innovative leaders in the funeral business are attempting to revolutionize the industry by mingling technology with tradition.
FuneralOne, a company based in St. Clair, Mich., plans to unveil new high-tech tombstones with embedded monitors that will play a video of a person's life at the touch of a button.
The Vidstone Serenity LCD panel can be inserted into any headstone. It allows mourners to view a five to eight-minute photo montage slideshow, and to listen to music through headphones.
"Once it's in the product, anybody visiting the cemetery can actually view that video by simply walking up to the screen -- which is solar powered, so you don't worry about battery usage -- simply plugging your head phones in, hitting a Play button and you can watch the video in your own privacy, directly from the tombstone," funeralOne's Joseph Joachim explained to Canada AM.
At the moment, the Vidstones offer a simple photo montage mix. But the company hopes to soon allow video clips and extensive video biographies.
Joachim admits that the idea is not for everyone. "But for those who want to go out there and have a chance to bring that memory and experience to the next level, we're trying to give them the capability to tell their unique story."
Joachim says funeral homes will charge as little as $95 for the video creation service, "or some give it away with their service." The Vidstone itself starts at $1,000 and up.
Joachim says the video panels will come with a 15-year standard warranty, and that includes coverage in the event of vandalism.
Joachim says people shouldn't be surprised that the funeral industry is trying to stay current with new technology. He notes that many funeral homes already offer such services as websites where mourners print prayer cards off, online guest books, and online interactive photo albums.
FuneralOne also offers Memorial Webcasting, which allows funeral directors are able to broadcast funeral, memorial, and cemetery services via a secure Internet website.
"Basically, every family has a story to tell," Joachim says. "We've developed all these unique products and services to help people connect with their loved ones."
