Well after a long series of computer and internet problems, I think I'm finally settled on this pc.. now i'm looking for a couple of things.. antivirus software and a firewall who don't use up alot of memory. cuz I've got a pc that should go faster then my old one, but instead it seems to go slower <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
Here are some specs:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Windows XP home editon SP 2
250 HDD
512 MB ram
Btw if anybody knows any software or tips to tweak my pc.. post ahead
and ow yeah, one more thing, don't know if this is the right place to put it so don't sue me if i'm wrong

Well, for starters, if it\'s a brand new PC, you\'ll likely need a defrag on it. 250GB is a large drive, and if you have clusters of data scattered across the entire drive, it has to spend that time searching each time it wants to run something... this can slow things down considerably when the drive only spins at 7200 rpm. A Defrag will move all the data to the head of the drive, and sort it out according to what it accesses most often.
Second, unless you need it, disable Indexing. This is a constant running process that scans and, well, indexes your drive to make for less time spent looking when you use the \'search\' feature.
Make sure Disk Compression is disabled. Great feature, bad resources. It has to decompress every file you run before it can open them, and that precious few microseconds can add up when the program requires a few hundred DLL files.
Hyperthreading... do you need it? Some have found that on computers not running heavy loads, the hyperthreading can in fact slow them down, as it splits your 3.2 processor into 2 1.6 processors, and runs menial tasks with it. Unless you need it, let the entire processor work it\'s ass off for you.
These are just the things I can think off from the top of my head. It\'s 6AM and I\'m just heading to sleep, so I\'ll probably peek back in after a few hours of comatose time.
