Pre-Layout Planning

Post by Josh »

Now I know when we start projects we don't always think about how it's all going to fit together. I figured it would be easier if we had a couple questions to ask ourselves of what is going to be in the project you are working on and be able to refer back to it and make sure you're putting things together the right way. Now I grabbed this from my graphics communication I class and thought I'd post this. Thank my teacher for photocopying this so I could give this to everyone here. <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Purpose of the product: What is the finished product to do? Is it supposed to attract attention, inform, entertain? A good design carries out the objectives.

Users of the product.: Will the printed material be for business or personal use? Should it appeal to students, parents or some other group? The design should appeal to the intended users.

Personality of the product:Will it be typographic (all type)? Will it have photographis, drawings, illustrations, or a combination of these?

Layout format.: Will the product be a booklet, folder, bulliten, brochure, single sheet, or book? Will it be a label, package, or bumper sticker.

Dimensions: What will be the physical size of the printed product?

Number of pages:Will there be one sheet printed on only one side or on both sides? Will there be several pages?

Number of copies.: The printing process used often depends on the number of copies wanted.

Finishing and binding: Will the printed sheets from the press or duplicator need to be trimmed, folded, scored, or bound together? Which method should be used?

Layouts required: Does the customer want to see thumbnail sketches, a rough layout, and a comprehensive layout before the final layout is prepared?

Estimated hours for completion: How long will the entire job take? The answer to this question will depend on the answers to the ten previous questions, and will help in making a cost estimate.

Completion Date: How many hours will be needed? How many working days will it take?
Please keep in mind that this was originally written for graphics on products (t-shirts, stickers, posters, etc) so this doesn't apply to the internet as much, but if you change the wording you CAN apply it to the internet projects you will be working on sometime in your killanet life <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' /> lol
