MSN Messenger: DEAD

Post by Endo »

After doing my when-ever-I-can check on Mess.be i stumbled across this horrible (to some of you, joyful) news. Thats right, MSN Messenger is no more..instead the world will soon be graced with the presence of Windows Live Messenger the version 8.0 of "MSN Messenger".

Only a few details about the change have been released, such as:
» Call your friends’ mobile or land-line telephones with Windows Live phone call, and make affordable domestic and international calls

» Easily share documents of all kinds with Sharing Folders

» A new design !

This change is in conjunction with the myriad of services Microsoft has, or will be releasing on us all shortly. Live.com, which to my knowledge has just become available, is live and sports a striking resemblence to googles personalized homepage, offering all the same features. It has been described as seperate to MSN.com; which leaves me to wonder if they have forgotten about Start.com which is also of similar style. With Windows Live Mail, the new and improved hotmail becoming an open beta (sign up here) and Microsoft now offering such services as Windows Live Safety Center beta and soon (supposedly) Windows OneCare Live, it would appear Microsoft have been stealing ideas again, only this time off themselves.

Im quite excited to see where this will take to, all i can see is a whole bunch of microsoft products getting Live beaten into them (Ohh, did i mention its now Office Live, not not Microsoft Office?). Who knows what else will pop up in the next few months.

R.I.P MSN Messenger Butterfly.

Quick, switch to Google Talk while MSN isn't watching! The Live.com site has a lot of similarities to Google's Personalised Homepage. I can see this become quite a blow to Google (not messesgner as such, but the whole Live idea). Windows is the #1 OS, IE is the #1 Browser and MSN is the default home page. If you're new to the Internet, you're likely to stick with MSN.

We'll see what happens next, but the ball's in Google's court.

Problem with Google Talk is that a Gmail account is needed. By letting anyone with a Passport use Messenger...they probably increased their usage by quite a bit.

However, for anyone who doesn't have a Gmail account yet...I have plenty of invites.

this isnt big news, i dunno how the heck it can be seen as bad news at all, i mean all it is apart from being an upgrade like any other messenger upgrade, just a name change... big deal /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

oh and some of that origional post is innaccurate...

First of all, MSN has always and will always be owned by microsoft, so the change means absolutly nothing, as for this comment "Microsoft have been stealing ideas again, only this time off themselves." i have no idea what your talking about :S, you cannot steal from yourself, i think you only put that in cause u probably dont like MS.

Microsoft do need to move into the online market to survive the google franchise, with google stealing the idea from microsoft of making an online office suite (yes this is true and dont forget their move into instant messaging and email integration isnt exactly origional either) microsoft are having to launch the live! collection of products otherwise they will loose their online business dealings to google and will be left with only windows as its majority source of income.

Im not microsofts biggest fan by any means but them launching all these live products is something they have to do else google will become more powerful then MS and we will have to hate google and call them thieves and evil for the sake of them being successful instead.

then again, give google a couple more years and we will be doing it anyway /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

oh and btw: before you say that ms launching antivirus, spyware, firewall protection is treading on the feet of the AV guard makers...

1) protection should be provided with an OS, you should not have to pay to keep your machine from being attacked, thats blackmail.
2) microsoft said themselves its only going to ever provide a basic level of protection, its not intended to replace but work with the other software, just like SP2's security centre does now.
3) for microsoft to be trusted more they need to add better security features and the idea that vista WILL come with antivirus, spyware and firewall protection (their upgrading the firewall) its definatly a good start.

Riiiight. The new version of MSN will be forcing you to use a bunch of crap software that you don't need or don't want. Hence why I'm not upgrading and I'll just be getting rid of all of MSN Messenger.
