On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the guns fell silent. After more than four years of the bloodiest, deadliest war the world at that time had ever seen, the silence was deafening. Soldiers on all fronts believed that the ceasefire was temporary and that the battle would rage again before nightfall. Elsewhere on the globe citizens were celebrating in the streets as news that the war was over spread from city to city. As the guns remained silent and orders were given to pull out, only then was the true cost of war tallied up.
A phrase utilized by Rudyard Kipling in his 1887 poem Recessional has become the international slogan of Remberance Day: Lest We Forget. In Canada, another term came into use, one referring to the nation\'s war memorials: We Will Remember Them. Every War Memorial in Canada bears these words:
They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
Unfortunately, politicians and military leaders (and in some cases religious leaders) worldwide seem to have forgotten, because so many of them want to rule their country, another\'s country, or even the world, and every day that passes sees more fatalities, more wounded, more collateral damage.
As the 87th Anniversary of the World War I Armistice nears, let us remember all of those who have given their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. Let us show our service men and women, those who have served and those who still serve, that we do remember the sacrifices, the lives lost, the returning wounded and those who still fight. The men and women still on active duty (whether you agree with the military actions or not) either on homesoil or foreign, still deserve respect, honour and our prayers that they may return home safe to their families and loved ones the world over.

Kinda made a montage of the places I remember from my trip to France/Belgium a few years back. Couldn\'t find my own photo\'s, so I used the ones from my school which I managed to get hold of.
An explanation of the images used is perhaps fitting. If you\'re pretty up to scratch with memorials, you can skip my ramblings. Top left is theMeninGate, located in Ypres. At 8pm, every night, The Last Post is played at the gate. If you ever get a chance to visit Ypres, the chocolate shops are great...but try and stick around until 8pm. On the sides of the Menin Gate is inscribed the names of those soldiers who have no grave to remember them by. Below the gate is Tyne Cot cemetery, the largest British war cemetery in the world. Almost 12,000 graves are located here, the majority of which are \"Known Unto God\". Almost 35,000 names are inscribes on the wall at the back, which is a continuation from the Menin Gate.
Top right is the Somme Memorial. This is a truly magnificent 150ft memorial made out of marble and brick. Some 70,000 names of British and South African soldiers are inscribed on this memorial, commemorating those who died in the Somme. Below this memorial is the poppy fields, along with a candle I bought from the church in the town of Messines. This is not a particularly large town and very few pictures can be found of this through Google. The church was badly damaged during the war, and is still trying to raise money to repair its massive organ.
Last but not least is the most personal image. The stain glass window in the bottom right is located in the entrance to my school. It was designed and created in 1947 by a member of the staff of Stirling High School to remember those who lost their lives in both World Wars. It serves as a reminder to all of us who pass it each day that war is still ongoing and we have not yet got the peace so many people gave up their lives for.
