Saw Producer Dies at 42

Film producer Gregg Hoffman, who with his partners turned a $US1 million ($A1.33 million) horror movie called Saw into a $US102 million ($A135.53 million) hit, has died at the age of 42, associates said.

Lions Gate Entertainment, which distributed Saw and its successor Saw II, said Hoffman died on Sunday in a Hollywood hospital of natural causes but gave no specifics. An autopsy is planned.

Saw, financed by Hoffman and his partners at Twisted Pictures, cost about $US1 million ($A1.33 million) to make but reaped $US102 million ($A135.53 million) worldwide at the box office when it was released in October 2004.

The sequel Saw II brought in even more earlier this year, and a third movie in the series was in production.

Saw is the grisly story of a serial killer called Jigsaw who devises intricate situations to get his victims to kill each other.

Hoffman and his partners independently financed their films which allowed them to reap the profits, a fact that led Hoffman to tell the Los Angeles Times that he had hit the jackpot.

Hoffman "had the uncanny ability to pursue creative and professional endeavors in a collaborative and inspiring fashion, traits all too rare in our industry," said Peter Block, president of production at Lions Gate.

I wonder what will happen with the Saw series now; didn\'t you say in chat the other day that there were more sequels planned? I\'ll watch the local paper here and see if they mention them at all, as Lion\'s Gate is in Vancouver.

There was supposed to be 5 movies in total.
I\'m wondering if he had them all scripted, and simply was waiting for the chance to film them all when he passed on... if so, it should not be too difficult for someone else to \'pick up the torch\', so to speak, and complete the series. With the profits he made in the first movie alone (considering he was completely self-financed, profits did not need to be shared between other people), there should be enough of an estate to complete the others, and reimburse the difference. His heirs would be fools to not allow that to happen, as the difference could work out to be into the hundreds of millions once #5 is done with it\'s shelf life (DVD/VHS releases).

I saw, saw 2 today, not really good but watchable.

Saw 2 I thought was a great movie, real gory and stuff. Nice TWISTS on the ending too.

And also, yes there is supposed to be 5 movies. I think that he has scripted them all because Saw 2 seemed to lead into a sequel.

lol wasn\'t really a twist coz my brother gave the ending away before even saw the movie, but yeh it had some really cool bits.
So yeh I saw
