Yes its true, for the first year of its launch Microsoft are GIVING away their visual studio express edition suites (NOT BETA, this is full version), and from what ive seen the only difference between express and full versions are the number of tools that come with it. what you can do with it is almost (or) exactly the same as the full retail product!

After one year microsoft WILL start charging for the software, also, its probably better if you download the ISO's in case they decide to remove the source so you can install offline and quickly...

its a hefty download and u have to install each one seperatly but they integrate seemlessly and u get all of this with it...

so what u get out of it... four good languages, a web developer (that works with .net) and good help files.

also:

i registered my copy with microsoft (first for me, lol) cause even though i dont like registering unless i need to cause of privacy, the offers you get if you register are worth it.

if you dowload the express versions you NEED to register it for the reg code, if u got the ISO's then u dont need to...

but what u do get with registering is 500 corbis (royalty free) decent images, 250 IconBuffet high quality icons (16x16, 24x24 and 32x32) and three good manuals giving you an intro to web development, C# and vb with a full analysis of the GUI (found it pretty useful)

so overall... with registration of the free product u get a decent intro to .NET until or if u can be bothered to buy a complete suite.
