If we were to host a big LAN party in a conference hall.....

.....list everything we\'d need.

Cables
Food and drinks
Available Power Supply (preferably 3 jacks per person, idealy run through some form of UPS to prevent over and underpowering the systems)
CAT cable would be ideal, just so that everyone would not have to supply their own
A central server would be a nice addition, along with a central hub, just to allow for easy networking and such... this way, instead of having to add each system into the network seperately, they could just plug in and have an IP assigned automatically

Depends really on what you are looking to provide at said LAN party... will it focus more on one specific game, or would it be a free-for-all?

Tables and chairs would be nice, as well... there are some that provide monitors so that all the people have to do is carry in their CPUs, but that\'s not a necessity. A large screen would be cool (projection, or simply RCA jack supported video card off a PC), so as to perform demos as well... could draw some sponsoring that way.

Sorry for nothing more specific... having had a REAL shitty weekend, and just getting home from driving through our lovely Lake Effect blizzard to rescue Tara, I\'m kind of preoccupied at the moment. Will probably revisit the topic later tonight after I\'ve gotten some caffiene or alcohol in my system... whichever I happen to aquire first.

In order of neediness:
Electricity.
Air-conditioning
more than 1-toilet to share between all the lanners
Security - A precautionary thing.
Tables to put the computers on
a few switches to connect all the computers
A support crew to slap all the n00bs on the backs of their heads.
Spare network cables
A ticket system - As in they buy a ticket at the door or before the lan, give it to the admins, admins give them a wristband or a mark or something.

And of course, SPONSORS!

Don't give the lanners full internet access. If they really need it to update their games and so on, then let them do it but don't open it up wide enough for them to bring a virus in.

[color=\"green\"]on what radar was saying about restricting the internet... how about if you have a specified section where they can plug their machines into the internet for supervised downloads? (and even then have it restriced to the sites of the games being played, and windows update?)

i havent really posted much, cause ive never been to a lan myself, but i reckon ns and radar have covered most (if not all) of it =) [/color]

The hotel is attached to a casino, and it\'s in Langley City, not Langley Township, so if we need any kind of event license we won\'t need to deal with the idiot at the Municipal Hall. The Hotel is 1 block from the main bus loop, and in the centre of a good suburban population area.

If we don\'t allow internet access, that will help things immensely, but yet, we will need some access for live updates to killanet.

The games will need to be carefully chosen. EA Canada has two studios here, Disney has a gaming studio, and there are at least 2 dozen developers such as Radical and Relic. BioWare is one province over, UbiSoft is on the other side of the country. Vancouver is rated as a world class game development centre, so let\'s take advantage of possible sponsorships by choosing games which were developed here....btw NFS: MW and NFS: U2 were both developed at EA\'s Burnaby studio.

We have a large number of computer companies here as well...Dell, IBM, Tagar Systems, and there\'s always Voodoo in Alberta. I know there are monitor companies here, which is what we\'re going to need.

I have the media contacts for uber coverage; this is a doable event with enough lead planning time, so I would say most likely may, june or july, or a long weekend. May and July have long weekends, chances are though we could be facing \"seasonal rates\" but we\'ll see how that goes. The casino and conference centre only opened last year, so a gaming event like this would be a good thing for them.

Tim over at CAD is workign out a LAN party as well, and he took an interesting route of looking into a local company that could rent them PCs for the party alone... the user rents the PC, the company delivers it to, and picks it up from the location. This allows people with crap PCs, or people who dont want to pack their towers around, to join in as well. Might be possible to get a decent rate from somewhere in town.
Maybe see if Mainframe wants to jump in on the deal (the people that made ReBoot and have 2 offices in the lower mainland). They would be good for some computer-generated entertainment.

I agree with radar on the internet thing... but there would be no way to stop someone from infecting the Lan anyway seeing how they could bring the Viruses/Worms/Trojans in on their computer and not know it... or know it >.>

But like Vercz said have a special area for updates and etc...

What kind of things can/will the hotel/casino offer food wise? is there fast food and etc near by?

Is this going to be a normal lan party... hang out, play games, etc or will there be like prizes and etc to win?

NS, has a good idea, find some company willing to rent PC\'s for those that dont want/cant to lug their pc\'s around.

Lots of staff, someone watching the PC\'s so nothing gets stolen, Watch for cheating, and etc.

Last thing for now...

I was considering a mixture of \"free for all\" game play plus some bona fide tournament play. Sponsored prizes would come in kind of handy for alot of different things we could do.

I did a search for lan tournament software:

You can upload music files and it will play on loudspeakers in the LAN rooms. There is a queue and people can request songs and see what is currently playing. It can also manage downloads for patches.
