This process will allow you to add more than one filter to your images while previewing each one separately as well as how they look together.
Open the image you want to apply multiple filters to. Here is the image I\'m going to work with:
The first thing you will want to do is duplicate your image in order to preserve the original file. To do this, click on Background Layer in your Layers Palette and while holding down your left mouse button, drag the layer to the New Layer icon.
Next, open the Filter Gallery
From the Filter Gallery you will be able to access all of your filters simply by clicking the file folder in the centre section of the Filter Gallery:
Once you select a Filter, PhotoShop will place the Filter Layer into the Filter Layer Palette:
Now you will be able to adjust the filter settings on the right side of the Filter Gallery window while previewing your image on the left side:
Some Filters offer more adjustment options than others; be sure to check out all of the controls - you can find some awesome effects by randomly adjusting various settings.
After you have adjusted the filter to your liking, click on the New Filter Layer icon:
The above step will add another Filter Layer by copying your previous filter settings, so now you see a double layer of your first filter layer.
With the New Filter Layer selected, you can change it to any other Filter in the Gallery and its effect will be combined with your original filter layer.
You can also make adjustments to each Filter Layer by selecting it. This will activate the Filter\'s adjustment controls.
If you decide you want to remove one of your new filter layers, simply select it and click on the Delete Effect Layer icon:
Once you have achieved the filtered look you want for your image, click the OK button above the Adjustment Controls:
To cancel all changes in the Filter Gallery and to return to your original image, click the Cancel button.
This is my image with the Rough Pastels and Film Grain filter effects added:
If you want, you can adjust the Levels in your image; you may want to do this if the filters have radically changed the lightness or darkness of your image:
To adjust Levels, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels
I\'ve adjusted my layers by sliding the arrows to make the snow stand out a bit more while adding a mystic tone to the old barn in the background:
You can now leave your image as it is, or you can carry on with the following steps:
To make this image appear more like a painting, add another Layer in the Layers Palette by duplicating the original (Background) layer the same way as I did when we began this tutorial, by dragging it to the New Layer icon.
Now you will need to move your new Layer Copy to the top of the Layer Palette; this will temporarily cover your new Filter Gallery Effects, but we\'ll change that in the next few steps.
To adjust your new top layer, you will first need to remove all of the colour from it. To do this, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate
Your image will now appear to be black and white:
Set the top layer\'s Blend Settings to Overlay and then adjust the Fill to your liking:
Once again, you can either stop here and save your image as is, or you can add depth to the new layer by adding another effect from your Filter Gallery:
Go to Filter > Stylize > Emboss. The preview won\'t be very pretty but you can get a good idea of the final effect as you adjust the settings. If you don\'t like it, you can always use CTRL + Z to undo the change.
