Castlevania: Curse Of Darkness digs up fresh screens

Castlevania: Curse Of Darkness digs up fresh screens

From its 2D roots through to this third-person action adventure, Castlevania has seen generation after generation of the Belmont clan attempt to free the land of Vallachia from Dracula\'s bloodthirsty threat. Only, with the toothsome devil finally nothing but ash in the wind, everything\'s gone completely coffin shaped. In killing the lord of vampires, the unsuspecting famille of vampire-hunters have released an evil, pestilent force - a disaster that leaves the whole of Europe in ruin. Whoops.

But while the long-suffering Belmonts lay low in shame, this pack of shots confirms there\'s a new anti-hero in town. The handsome fellow you can see waving a sword is Hector, a Devil Forgemaster - sort of a demonic blacksmith. Previously one of two pupils of big Drac himself, Hector quit the castle when he got fed up of his master\'s sinful ideas - presumably repelling mobs of villagers and cleaning up all the blood was just too much for the lad. But when the vamp king ends up on the business end of a Belmont stake, Isaac - Dracula\'s other apprentice and fellow Forgemaster - blames Hector for deserting, before fixing up our hero\'s missus in a fatal witch trial.

All of which intricate and romantic plotting leads us to Hector\'s return. And boy, is he an unhappy devil. Like previous Castlevania games, the action takes place in Dracula\'s castle, pitting you against monstrous enemies such as the black dragon or flaming beast you can see below. But Hector\'s got a set of new talents to freshen up the old hack\'n\'slash formula - he\'s prepared for some serious demon ass-kicking, and as a Devil Forgemaster he can form allies with the numerous Innocent Devils that swarm around the environment. By using this forge ability, Hector can fly, shift massive objects and mount multiple attacks on his enemies. We\'ll be sinking our critical teeth into the game very soon, but you can whet your appetite right now by taking a bite from the screens below.
