Brothers in Arms - new trailer

Brothers In Arms is the most brain-achingly authentic game this side of Gran Turismo 4. Developer Gearbox has approached the invasion of Normandy with the same fastidiousness that Polyphony treats carburettors, spending an insane amount of cash on research in the process. So, when you\'re painstakingly guiding paratroopers through Nazi-occupied France, rest assured the countryside is accurate down to the last hedgerow, duck pond and smouldering corpse jutting tragically from a Sherman tank.

Brothers In Arms does look lovely, and the gunplay is refreshingly tactical. You control two teams from the 101st Airborne using a simple control interface. The cowardly Hun is usually well dug in, and winkling him out requires some light strategising. First, pin Jerry in place with a barrage from your \'fire\' team. Then, once the Bosch has got his head down, you order the \'assault\' team to outflank the position, thereby capturing Fritz with his bratwurst out. When everything comes together with pocket watch precision it feels incredibly rewarding - but we have noticed a few creases in the game\'s britches.

Like Full Spectrum Warrior the combat is rule-based, in the sense that when both sides are in cover they magically become impervious to bullets. The point being that you\'re forced to outmanoeuvre your opponent, rather than sitting back and whittling his numbers down with the occasional lucky shot. However, at present the Germans are counted as being in cover even when they plainly aren\'t. So you can pump round after round into Herman\'s chest and, rather than blowing his lungs out, it \'suppresses\' him instead. (Each soldier has a suppression meter over his head, indicating how scared he is, and therefore the likelihood of him shooting back.) This has to be fixed, and fortunately the developer is aware of the problem.

We\'re also mildly concerned that switching between teams doesn\'t feel quite snappy enough, and it\'s easy to get muddled over who\'s actually doing what. But nobody said the road to Berlin was going to be easy and Brothers In Arms still gets much more right than it does wrong, for the most part creating a tense, cat and mouse experience. And because the action takes place in one area, over several days and with the same men (not all of whom will be coming back) there\'s a real sense of drama and indeed history. We\'re still confident that with some extra time on the drill square, these boys will do us proud when the big day comes.
