Small Wonder
PS3's massive power from in a pint-sized package

Since last issue, Sony's top tech gurus have publically unveiled the inner-workings of the Cell processor, the CPU which will power the Playstation 3. As expected, the chip, developed in conjunction with IBM and Toshiba, is powerhouse whish already has rival chipmakers scrambling to play catch-up.

The first version of the chip shown to the public runs at more then 4ghz - that's as fast or faster then today’s high-end PCs, and 13 times faster then 300MHz Emotion Engine which powers the Playstation 2. the Cell sets it self apart from other processors with its unique its structure. At the core of the Cell us an IBM Power processor that doles out computing chores to nice interlinked "synergistic processing unites" - essentially CPUs with in the CPU - so that the Cell can effectively be working on nine separate computing tacks simultaneously.

To put this in perspective, the PS2 has two "sub-CPUs" called Vector Units within its Emotion Engine. "Dual Core" PC processors (two in one chips) won’t go main stream for a while, so Sony definitely has a lead. PS3's Cell may not feature all nine- sub-CPUs , but it still expected to be immensely powerful.

4ghz of pure gaming power <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... iggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

got any info about how much ram it will be packing? i'd say it would want at least 1gb ..possibly even 2gb (but thats just power hungry me <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' /> )

the ps2 really only has a 300mhz cpu <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Optimistic onlookers could - and have - suggested that the reduced capacity of the DRAM chip is because the PS3’s memory bandwidth will be increased from 25.6 GB/Sec to 51.2 GB/Sec. This would mean that the Cell chip takes on more of the work, permitting this budget-friendly memory reduction.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the xbox will have; 3(3ghz) cores and if I am getting it right than the xbox should have more processing power.
