Well today my ps2's laser finally stoped working..It wont even load up games anymore. The death of the laser was along time coming. I have always had long load times on games and over the past weeks my ps2 started screaming(like EEEEEEEEEHHEE noises) when playing and loading games.
My options as of right now are:
Option 1: Buy new laser reader... $40-60 USD + shipping
Option 2: Buy new ps2 perferable a slimline version....$149
Option 3: Don't do anything and just use my xbox till the ps3's come out....$ unknown price of ps3
Yeah i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, any ideas on what I should do?

PS2's laser reader died
king_of_hearts, you're not alone. Let me guess, when you put a disc in the machine, you hear it spin the disc up then it goes *click* and starts again, doing the same thing over and over... many people who own the old "Campbells Chunky" version of the PS2's are having this happen, and the fact is, most of them are out of warranty now.
Your best bet would be to buy a ps2 slimline, thats what i did. As the PS3 wont be out for atleast another 12 months, and when it does come out, it will most likely be around the same price as the PS and the PS2 when first released, around $800au which is around $600US.
I have the slimline and it's great, it's silent untill the cooling fan turns on durin high stress times for the machine, and its just so light and plays everything amazingly well.

We had the same problem... How old is your ps2? Did you get it when it first came out? You should follow these steps before buying anything new:
1.) Get a can of compressed air
2.) Get a ps2 cleaning cd (can be found at EB Games)
3.) Take the cover off the ps2 carefully
4.) Clean the ps2 with the compressed air
5.) Use the ps2 cleaning cd
6.) Try to use the ps2 a few times
This is what I did and now it works fine.
