Nintendo DS Lite Announced! - Updated!

Post by Skidz`Crew »

The re-design rumor has finally concluded: Nintendo DS Lite. Nintendo Japan has released this announcement today.

Nintendo DS Lite is a new version of the original DS. Lite means “Light”, both in weight and brightness. The new design is lighter and smaller than the original DS. The new screen uses a 4–Level adjustable one, which will be able to offer better illumination than the old screen.

Product name: Nintendo DS Lite
Release date: March 2, 2006
Price: 16,800 JPY ($143.6 USD)
Dimension: (Length) 133.0 * (Width) 73.9 * (Height) 21.5 mm (folded)
compared to (Length) 148.7 * (Width) 84.7 * (Height) 28.9 mm (folded) for DS
Weight: 218g
compared to 275g for DS

According to IGN, Nintendo has released a little more info on that sexy DS Lite, including some tidbits that give us just a little more info on when we can expect to see it stateside. Seems as though we won't be counting on a simultaneous launch worldwide.

"Although the product was announced in Japan, with no details given for international market, DS Lite will indeed be released in Europe and America. The company hasn't given a specific release date, only stating that the western markets can expect a release following Spring. This seems to suggest that a simultaneous release with the Japanese version (set for 3/2) is out."

The article also goes on to say that Nintendo is preparing the system in three colors for Japan, and expects to continue to sell the older version at slightly below the cost of the DS Lite. No definitive word yet on how much we can expect to shell out for the unit in America, though, at 16,800 yen, it works out to about $145 dollars.

We'll keep you posted on any other developments.

UPDATE!:
How beneficial will the DS diet be for gamers? How about 5x screen brightness, a larger stylus, and better battery life to name a few? Aussie-Nintendo writes: "For a system that looks so good, playing GBA games, quite frankly, doesn't look good. Due to the smaller form factor, all cartridges stick out an extra centimeter or so, so you're not likely to store a GBA game there in case for the off chance you decide to play it."

Go Nintendo: Yes! Dunno what your thinking about the whoel NOT thing there, Dren. Try looking at this from the compnies perspective, It's a way for them to make more money. The DS has to go down in price, but if they release a new and better version, then it gives them a reason to keep it at it's price. Also it will save money on materials to build it since it will use less. I also like where the moved the lights to, easier to see when you've closed your DS. And one last thing, HOW CAN A VG SYSTEM BE SEXY?! IT CAN'T! ONLY PEOPLE AND CARS! I can't stand it when people call a video game system or controller or anything like that Sexy.... except maybe the PS3 controlled for the females... *shudders*

I think that's far enough for the discussion of whether or not a vg console can be "sexy." I can sum it up quite easily with one short quote.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Done.

My personal opinion of the DS? Haven't played it, don't like it. Sofar anyway. Until i play with the console, i doubt my opinion will change.
