How will LocationFree impact you?

[font=\"Arial\"]Many people may have heard about the the Playstation 3 having LocationFree capabilities. What is this? And why do you want it? Well, the short answer is that its a brilliant and simple way to converge all your media data into a single place of access, no matter where you are in the world. "Anywhere in the world?", I hear most people questioning. Yes thats right. You will be able to play all your own stored media streamed over a network from a LocationFree base station (PS3) to anywhere in the world you have network access, and through many various devices.

The PSP for instance has complete LocationFree support. But also, Sony have released a LocationFree TV that is portable and if you'd prefer to connect using your laptop or computer you can too&#33; Starting to sound pretty useful isn't it? One perfect use that comes to mind for myself, is the ability to stream movies from the LocationFree base station to my PSP anywhere in my house or within range of my Wifi router. Yes, I'd like to watch movies or TV in bed <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

LocationFree seems like a "so what" type technology at first, until you start thinking about the ramifications. How often have you wished you could download that extra album you love listening to, onto your iPod. With a LocationFree device and a network connection (Wifi or Ethernet) you can. Even if you are on the other side of the world, you can still play your music, and your favorite movies, from your own media source.

Notice I haven't yet said anything about games - consider the possibilities if games were also LocationFree capable. This is purely speculation on my behalf, but owning a PSP, and a LocationFree base station (that just happens to be a games device), the possibilities become mind boggling.

So many of you will question whether this will get much use, and if it is more of a 'gadget' type thing than a useful feature. But I might point out that LocationFree is actually not new. It is now in its second generation and has been available for over a year. While the PSP has only recently (last 5 months) had LocationFree capabilities, thanks to a firmware upgrade - who said all firmware upgrades for PSP were bad <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
