Nintendo Reveals "Revolution" Was A Code Name
Anyone checking Nintendo's Revolution site today will discover that the console's true name has been revealed. That's right...it's now Nintendo Wii. Wii is pronounced "we" and as sometimes happens in translations, we is easily compared to wee, which can mean "small" or even "taking a wee" as in...urinating. How well this will go over in many countries will remain to be seen as Nintendo begins a new marketing campaign. This is what their new flash intro has to say:
"Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasises this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
"Wii has a distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolises both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's not really about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."
Neither do I, I think it's a really stupid name and they should've stuck with Revolution. Consumers are already familiar with the name, and imo it's not a smart marketing move on their point.

I'm not suprised that Nintendo would take this route. They've been trying to milk the "secrecy and rumour mill" for so long now... just look around this board for examples. Most of the posts about Wii were mere speculation and hearsay. Nintendo essentially, with this one move, slapped all the members of the rumourmill upside the head with a nice strong "STFU and wait until we tell you something before you go spreading it".
I don't think even naming their next console after a bodily function that usually results in a flush-and-swirl will help them though. They're on the path to taking the same route as said function they named the console after.

Now about Wii. I think Revolution would have been a much better name, but what ya gonna do? Atfirst I thought Wii was a rather stupid name, but after reading their explanation for it ont he site, I think it makes a lot of sence. Plus it let's me say thing like "Wii will... Wii will... ROCK YOU" or "Wii is coming out here, and like it or not, Wii is taking over." As for the whole "wee-wee" thing, you seriosuly need to grow up on that.

No... 7 year olds don't know how to spell very well or use grammar properly. Can you say punctuation?

We aren't the only ones saying that about "wee" Mario...
From GamesIndustry.biz:
"However, the name is unlikely to go down well across the large swathes of the English-speaking world - including the United Kingdom - where "wee" is a very common children's slang phrase for the act of urination. In Scotland and Ireland, however, the diminutive console will at least be appropriately named, as "wee" is a word meaning "small" in the vernacular of those regions." Journalist: Tom Bramwell
I don't like the name, not because of the 'refrence' to wee but just because, to me, it sounds stupid.
Plus imagine talking to friends about it, "last night we played 'we'" They'd be totally confused, therefore you'd have to put "Nintendo we" in every sentence and that doesnt sound too good either.
...Should have stayed with revolution.
But why don't you stop being a Nintendo Hater...
why dont you stop being a microsoft hater?
imo, the whole "we" concept sounds a little script kiddie-msn-l33thax type speak. eg. "Wii is awesome" -> pronounce "we is awesome" follow?
revolution ftw, kthxbye.

I don't really see a major problem with "Wii". I will agree with Tami that it is a bad marketing concept as everyone was using the Revolution name as a foundation to most "Pre-Orders" and so forth (check out things like EBGames.com and such - were all Revolution until "Wii" was announced). Even though (I believe) the Nintendo64 was once codenamed "Dolphin", it wasn't too public (just video game fansites and Nintendo Power at the time), it was never used as a marketed name like "Revolution" was. So when you look at it this way, it will be a little confusing for some consumers who know Wii by its codename.
I know not everyone's going to like this name due to the "Wii/Wee" reference; understandable, I suppose. But, I'll agree with something another source said about the name change, "Nintendo has even grown up enough to break free of its own name. No longer is it 'Nintendo Wii'..it's just 'Wii'." (mind you, not a direct quote - but the point is implied).
And how in the world was Nightstorm being Anti-Nintendo at all? He only stated what the rest of the world is thinking.. lol
