Kelly Down Becomes First Canadian To Qualify For Montreal

Kelly DownKelly Down is going to Montreal. The 21-year old Winnipeg native secured his place at the WCG 2006 Canadian championship on Friday by winning the Starcraft Broodwar tournament hosted at BaseLAN XI in Winnipeg.

"oG)Jiang" (Kelly's tag name) defeated teammate oG)Zergraptor after an exciting final match. Here's the report from oGaming website (www.ogaming.org):

The matches were set as double knockout and to start things off with a bit of excitement Raptor and Jiang faced off in round 1 with Raptor taking the win and putting Jiang to the losers bracket early. Both players then squared off against thier relative opponents winning each game with ease, you could tell early on that the rivalry between Winnipegs top players was far from over and the finals would no doubt be decided between these 2 players.

Paraniod became the first map in the finals, Jiang pulled off a very nice proxy gate with a few cannons for backup blocking Raptors lower ramp, which caught Raptor by surprise as he wasnt expecting this and acknowledged this by offering Jiang "very nice opening", Jiang microed his way in and took the win.Both players now were even with a loss, the next match would be the decider for the trip to Canada's finals in Montreal.

Last map was played on Gaia with Jiang top right and Raptor bottom left, Raptor took his natural while Jiang went for Zeal w/speed, after getting a couple 'sairs to harrass and scout Jiang attacked Raptor's expo taking it down as Raptor came out with his muta's, knowing his zeals were now outmatched by the muta's Jiang committed them to Raptors main taking out a few drones before losing them and he quickly got his archons ready and his own expo. Raptor then came in with muta's looking to repay the favor on Jiangs expo but couldnt do enough damage with Jiang defending using 3 cannons, 2 archons and 2 'sairs. Jiang then counter-attacked breaking into Raptors main with zeals and archons doing too much damage to drones for Raptor to continue.

Giving Jiang the final win and the trip to Montreal. Both players put on a good show and impressed many people their with their skills.
