Okay, what I would like to know is this:
Of the other communities and sites you go to, what features and services do they offer that you like the most?
What sorts of member perks do you like or want to see?
What sorts of programmes or chances for participation do you like?
If you like to make casual games, would you like to be able to offer them as free downloadables, or when you get to a "Pop Cap Games" type of quality, would you like to be able to sell them through KillaNet?
Would you like to see KillaNet become more of a marketer/promotion/publisher type site?
These don't have to be graphics sites, just anywhere else that you go.
For instance, one community allows members to have mini-stores where they can sell their wares, such as stock 3D models. Then there are places like deviantART, which while they have some decent options, they seem to be more concerned about making more money for themselves than for the artists which populate the place. Yet another place publishes an annual coffee table book full of artwork created by community members.
If you have specific things you would like to see, please give us a link to the site which offers them so that we can poke around.
Your input on this is very important, so please take the time to reply and offer suggestions.

The only other website I regularly visit is deviantART and TechGear007 and TechGear007 is just a forum... so, I'll point out the things I like about dA (Even if they could be improved)
* Profiles: I like the fact that you can have a profile with a journal right there. There are comments you can have on your page and the comments can be threaded. Yes, I know we have all this in the IPB profiles, but I just think the focus with those profiles is what the user posts. on deviantART the focus is the art and links between other members.
* Gallery: We don't have a gallery for our members. Simple as that. There is no where that a member can upload their art and have it show in their own gallery. I don't like IPB's gallery and I think it is just not really what we need. We may need to make something ourselves, but I think we need a place for our members to upload their art in their own gallery.
I'm going to add more... I'm too distracted right now. Just a bit exhausted from work.. sorry <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... #>/cry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

For all of its ills, I do like the dA profiles. Whether that is achievable with IPB, I don't know. I know that with the other stuff we've been tossing around, the forum is important for network integration - I positively *hate* the dA forums - other than the thumbshare one and the status one where they lie about stuff - and I do not wish to use any other forum software, I want to stay with IPB. Cross network integration is going to be a real pain in the keister, I think.
We do need to find a gallery solution, especially because of the stuff we've been tossing about. I think galleries can be created in SD, but they aren't as effective as dA's galleries. As I told Wayne, I want paid members to have the ability to have categorized galleries, the number of which will depend on their subscription level. Free members get one gallery - maybe two if we want to duplicate a Scraps type function. Basic paid members would have one or two more - this would be important to people who might shoot landscapes but also have stock accounts. I think people would be much happier if they could maintain all of their work, watchers, comments, replies from one account instead of two or three different ones. We would obviously have a cap on the number of galleries one account could have. Then we run into the discussion as to whether such a site is run as kn or under a different name but integrated into kn - another huge headache.

So I don't really go to any community sites other than this one, and DA... and we all know I get in trouble because I don't keep up with my DA account.
With that said, I'll just make a few suggestions - don't know if they are possible, but definitely worth suggesting.
The profiles on the forum now are subordinate of the forum, we need to spin that around I think. The forum is subordinate of the profiles. Basically this means either re-write a profile system, and remove the one we have here to what we need, or if this one is editable in anyway, we can do that... I really have no idea if either of those are options. If not, we would have to build our own, and my controls, assistant ... all those links would have to be edited to point to the correct places - if that's possible. Basically we would start making this system our own customized thing.
with that said:
Gallery Stuff:
1) We need to have the ability to have an RSS feed from their gallery to show their new where ever they please to show it. (This could be set as their default RSS feed on the forum)
2) Collapseable comments. Sometimes you get so many damn comments that it scrolls to the next page, the default would be all open, but the other options would be to set it as collapse all comments you have responded to.
3) ability to re-arrange your profile as you see fit. Can't add or subtract any fields, only move them - will be limited in options for the page to be evenly distributed.
4) kinda goes along with being able to move things around, but also be able to choose your own color scheme we can have two at first, but later we can add more. I wouldn't go as far as to allow them to do their own CSS - things get messy and looks like myspace (gags), but just something that's easy customization. Just so it's not cookie cutter.
Interesting ideas I think ....

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. Instead of seeing Forum then a Profile, we should see a Website > a profile > a forum. Not completely get the Forum out of the picture and not make it inactive, but instead keep the profiles (the members) our main priority.

Not really sure what to say.
I like the gallery idea for each member, although that would be a big hog on bandwidth wouldn't it?
Additionally, if we have comments in the gallery section, and discussion, in theory that may drive people away from the forum... or not, I really don't have much experience in this.

Bandwidth isn't a problem. Believe me. It's not.
I think the forum should be more of a instructional place rather than simple conversation.... shouldn't it? I think that's where we were going with that idea... am I right?

Oh my...
What I've really been trying to come up with is something along the lines of dA meets Facebook. Considering these are both massive sites (seriously, massive) the coding involved would be monumental. We could save time by using a number of existing scripts for bits of it, but we'd really need to custom code the rest. Josh, we used CVS before and it kinda worked so perhaps if we done something like that again the code would be spread at least between 2 of us - I don't know if anyone else is able/willing to get involved with something like this (Paul?).
Before anything like this can begin, we need a full roadmap on what the hell is going in it. Getting it complete then deciding we need a major feature isn't going to work.

yup yup... We need a COMPLETE Story board of this.
important decisions to make:
KN I think - COULD - be the URL for this. Is this what we want? or do we want a different. We REALLY need to at least tie the two some how.
Gaming - how will this work. will they be offered download by open source or executable. a little video of it? or will it be a web app. that plays the game (no idea if that's possible)? NEED SOME GAMER INPUT!!!
How would the code be divided. We need a strong platform that we build from. This might be coding in things OTHER THAN PHP, I'm not the coding genius. I can help plan out this board, but I don't know the REALLY technical bits.
Deviatart meats facebook. I'm.... wow... just..... that's powerful. I love it! Which brings me to, do we have networks? We need security - able to block people we don't want posting on our stuff, and a way of not having to be a friend to post, but it has to be approved by the gallery owner.... that's an thought in progress.
I'm loving this, I feel like we are getting somewhere. To set things straight in the beggining I think this set up makes sense:
the top of this set up is obvious.
Project Manager : Tami
Department 1 (Platform): headed by Scott and Josh, who ever we need to bring in to help, or for special things will be direct underlings (if we need someone, I can do swaying.)
Department 2 (Profiles): Scott or Josh...
Department 3 (gallery): again Scott or Josh....
Department 4 (gaming center (centre)): ... yeah we need another person here, even if it's not full time ( meaning a few hours here and there whenever possible) Paul? <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> .
Department 5 (marketing & Pitching): I can do this.... I'll pitch the hell out of this thing to anyone anytime, and I'm sure I will get people on board. You give me people to pitch this to, I'll do it - I won't fail. I have some research on this stuff already.
Obviously everything is in direct contact of Tami, but we need a good strong system before we move forward....

Hmmm. Ok so the only other forum that i frequently visit is a little gaming server forum, and thats not very professional at all so i think that point is null and void.
then again. that forum has a "karma" system, every user has the chance to give someone positive or negative karma based on their post. maybe the negative isnt needed here, but does anyone like the idea of people being able to have a community rated score attached to their name? (also similar to the "credit" system on the GameAmp forums. http://guildwars.gameamp.com )
If you like to make casual games, would you like to be able to offer them as free downloadables
well as part of one of my classes at school i make simple games in VB, i could compile them to an EXE and offer them for download. anyone know if copyright applies if i make this version of the game, but its based on one already made? (eg if i code a version of Pong?)
Ok so thats my thoughts, now i guess my thoughts on some other people thoughts.
I like Tami's idea about gallery's for subscribing members, where the amount is relative to their subscription level. i think people would go for that.

I really need to get a good read through on this and see what I can help with / commit to. However, my current living situation (which some of you know about, most don't) sucks. I will be getting out of it within a week or two and my free time will go up a lot until I get a job. Really need a road map of what needs done so we know who can do what. Will add to this post when I can, or add another reply. Okay, my brain stopped working, end of post.
Edit: I really like the more profile-centric instead of forum-centric idea.

Love is all a matter of timing.
It's no good meeting the right person too soon or too late.
If I'd live in another time or place...
...my story might have had a very different ending.

Would you rather people be able to download your opensource, or your exe if you make it availible for download. Or both.
Would you rather people be able to play the game on the web with maybe some activex control of some sort (that's over my head), or would you rather be able to upload a video mockup of some sort of it.
I'm just trying to get the feel for what the gamer creators would like in this instance.

I would suggest drop gaming for this. DSL et al can operate under KN fine, this should be an art project IMO.
