The only problem I see with that is the fact that people can't se ea full view when they first go to the page (Subscribers on dA see fullviews of images by default when they look at an image. Non-subscribers see the thumbnail and then they have to click it to see the full view.)
Surely the can't always show full size, since there is no telling that it'll be able to fit on everyone's screen?

Full size is just a word for the "bigger picture." Lots of artists do put in a full size image that does go off the screen, and that's no big deal, we'll just have to make sure our layout won't get screwed up by it. Artists can also specify what the 'fullview' size is. Normally I make my fullview sizes 800 pixels in width where the thumbnails are only about 100-200px in width and height. But the big thing is, we need to make sure we have the ability to comment RIGHT UNDER the image. There are times when people give critique and when there's a page of comments above the 'add comment' box (like on dA) you have to scroll allll the way up to look at the piece, write your critique and keep doing that until you're done with your critique.

I've read that in your edited post.
I think I might be able to make some. In fact, I have already made one that I think would be usable with some adjustment. (From an icon set I started but never finished or got very far.)
But that's the least important right now.

lol we still don't know what layout we're using.
I think we need to be a bit faster with this. We only have Scott for so many days to coding purposes. We need to start on this stuff lol. We need a design first though >.<
Here are a few things that I was wondering:
How are we going to format url's for people's galleries? Subdomains? Folders (mod_rewrite)?

I guess my stuff is for Tami. Press Release, blogging feeds, etc. I'll be starting a full marketing idea, and a affiliate program stuff...

I think people feel like it's more of "Their own" when they get a user.domain.com instead of just a mod_rewrite folder.

Okay. I\'ve been trying to express how much I hate that ajax fullview thing. Here are my points as to why I do NOT like it:
* You can\'t have a default full view when you open the page. Meaning, I don\'t automatically see the fullview of the image. I would have to click the stupid thumbnail to see the fullview and I don\'t like that. I want to see the image in all it\'s beauty once I go to the page.
* You can\'t add comments while you have a dumb image overtop of the entire page.
~~~~
Now, I can see this as a way for non-subscribers to view their images. They have to take the extra step to see the image. But if I was paying for service from us, I would NOT want to take the extra step in clicking on the thumbnail to see what I clicked on originally. Example. I\'m looking in a gallery. I see a thumbnail that looks sort of neat, I click it. Now that I\'m on that page, I have to click the stupid thumbnail a second time to see what I expected to see when I originally clicked the thumbnail in the gallery.
I\'m not sure how much more I can prove my points to you people <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... #>/cry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> Seems like I\'ve said this a million times lol
I can see this as a non-subscriber feature, but subscribers, I think, should not have this feature.
LONNNGGG Conversation between Josh and I ... it's been edited for content, length and anything else you can think of.
We got some good stuff in there.... comments, suggestions, ideas, all that..... give it out to us!
Josh says:
I don't know how else I can express how much I ****HATE**** that AJAX fullview
Wayne says:
we are just trying to find a solution that will look good, accomplish the goal, and still give all funcationality.
Josh says:
everyone LOVES it because it's beautiful AJAX... big whoop. It's slow on old machines, and it's not what we need.
Wayne says:
the biggest things is that we -cannot- look anything like DA
Wayne says:
I think we just need to find a solution that will be a happy medium. I know the whole Ajax this is way out there and Web 2.0 blah blah blah
Josh says:
Well the thing that I want is to have subscribers SEE the full image without having to go the extra mile in clicking a thumbnail
Wayne says:
as far as the dash goes.....maybe the dash board stuff is just little icons on the left side, and it pops up with you go to it.... I don't know
Josh says:
That's also doable
Wayne says:
I just know I hate the way DA has it cause you have to keep going back to the other page, and it's more page loads ... slows down the site
Josh posts: Wayne says:
we could have that on the left for all the dashboard stuff and when you click on that vertical bar it slides out
Josh says:
We could also have that
Wayne says:
it wouldn't change the rest of the page would it?.... only cover up some of it. it would be quicklinks to take you places
Josh says:
No, cover up, and mouse out for about 3 seconds would make it collapse back in to just icons That's what I was thinking for the q.links too
you hover over that tab thing I made and it would expand down over the page
and then mouse out for ~3 seconds and it would go back up lol
Wayne says:
if it's 3 we would probably want to put an x on it to close it quickly. specifics...
Josh says:
What I was thinking though, maybe instead of having a dashboard in a column on the left/right we could possibly just put ads there
and then once they subscribed, they get a bigger view of webpage and more content to display in the content area
Wayne says:
yeah that would be great
I like ad space
Wayne says:
is it possible to add a comment block to the ajax large image at all?
for non-subscribers I would like them to be able to comment right there as well
Josh says:
of course
I'd like this ajax thingy non-sub all together x_x
Wayne says:
if the left column goes away when you have subscription....
then you have all this extra space on the page
roughly 150 px
Josh says:
Here's what I was thinking
I'll draw.
ok got it drawn out lol... Basically the ad column is removed and they gain more viewing capabilities
Wayne says:
the dash pops up (might be better to be a click dash)
so for subscriptions the image can be full on the page
what I'm thinking ....for comments
make the comment box moveable
you can move it anywhere on the screen that way you can be looking at the picture and making a comment
with the box right there
nightmare to make?
the image page can't be a downgrade in affects and looks for subscription ...
that's my concern
Josh says:
I'd be more worried about the comments and how they show up
Josh says:
Nested? Threaded? How are we showing them? :x
think about it... a company does a press release right before they start doing the implination
having a conversation with 3+ people makes it hard to follow along
However, I think it is nice sometimes for just a simple "Thank you"
But other than the occasional "Thank you", I think it's horrible
So what I was thinking in my own mind
Maybe only the owner of the page where the comments are at can post nested
the rest have to post regularly
But the owner can post regularly too
Wayne says:
yes... I'm thinking
that if we have nested at all... it needs to default to colapsed
unless you are the one that posted the original
cause that way it would be open for you to read what was posted back
but only if the comment was new to you
confusing...and lots of work
Josh sends:
Anyway, that image is what I was trying to explain
Only the owner can post nested
Wayne says:
can it default to closed to everyone?
but open to the original poster?
only for the first time they view
Josh says:
We can just display "Owner replied to this message" somewhere in the original comment
and upon clicking it, it will display the owner comment/reply
Wayne says:
yeah
Wayne says:
exactly
Kind of a survey
I like the commenting idea - because it is a REAL PAIN when 3 or 4 of us are talking in one thread and not everyone knows that a reply was made, and having to go through all of the comments to follow the conversation is just >.<
One thing I was wondering about is a comment purge every so often - not on the photo comments, on the comments left on a user's profile page. I have 3 years' worth of comments on my profile page, and the only way I can get rid of them is to "hide" them. OH!!!! That's another thing - being able to edit your own comments!!!! I *hate* that we can't do that on dA. Even if there is like a 15 minute limit on the edit - just SOMETHING.
As I already told Wayne, it's far too early for press releases and announcements. I'd rather that this plan be kept to ourselves for now, other than those from the "outside" whose input I've specifically asked for. I already have two non-KN people who are willing to be beta-testers, and one is on dial-up, which is why I asked her.
The ajax full-view is pretty, but if it's going to cause problems in the flow of usability, I can live without it. I do not, however, want fullviews going on a separate page upon click, with no options whatsoever on that page. Users will not like it if they can't fave, comment, order, whatever from fullview. I agree, the comment box MUST go directly under the image, on both midsize view and fullview. I hate having to scroll to the bottom of the page, especially if I am writing an installment on the adventures of The Feared Pirate Dog Bud. It's a pain to have to keep scrolling up to look at the photo I'm writing from.
I like the flyout or dropdown menu for the dashboard.
Shoutboxes/Shoutboards. At the very least, some type of Shoutboard is a must, because alot of us use them for features and stamps.
For example: http://adaera.deviantart.com/journal/
For those who are not familiar with the features on a dA image page:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/59178188/
Note the Embed and Thumb codes at the bottom right of the image information. The thumb codes are what are used for making features like in my journal and shoutboard. The Embed feature can be turned off by the artists. As can the ability to download the photo, send it to mobile, the option to make it a print or not - the print thing is going to be important in regards to what we do in the way of a store.
http://help.deviantart.com/ < how they do their FAQ's - which for the most part can be totally useless. Take note that a limited amount of html coding is permitted in journals and comments/replies.
Oh and by the way, Orby needs a sprucing up. They can have "Fella" but we have ORBY!!! <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
More viewing space is a good thing for subscribers. We need ads, but let's not get carried away.
Oh and emoticons: UNIFORM AND CLEAN not like these: http://comments.deviantart.com/emoticons
Okay, that is all for now, seeing as I am making Wayne stay awake to read my reply to their longass conversation <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />
for comments... we could make them into reply conversations, but not nested.... displays on the comment "reply to Tami's 4th comment"
comment purge... just display up to 10 on the page and have to click more for the rest of them. you can see them all later, and it doesn't clutter up.
Edit is a must.
ajax will be key in a lot of this I think, needs to be clean, but needs to be efficient on page loads and load time.
more later.... bed time... not everyday does the boss lady make you stay up instead of sleep lol
