Basic room tutorial

Post by Souljah »

Hi everyone, this is my first tutorial and my first post on this great community.

In this tutorial I will show you how to make basic room(walls, door, window and floor), no furnitures and stuff like that for now. It should be easy to follow, no complicated things. It’s based on basic cube modelling, I’ve seen 1 or 2 tutorials like this, but there’s hard to find god C4D tutorials so that’s why I post mine.

1. Start up by opening a new project. Add a Cube(Objects -> Primitive -> Cube) with these settings:

Of course you can use your own settings, depending on how big you want your room to be.

2. Copy your Cube(You can do that with the basics CTRL+C and CTRL+V, or just hold down CTRL and drag your object downwards in the object panel). Now you should have 2 Cube’s. Rename these to Exterior and Interior. Interior will be the inside and Exterior will be the outside of your room.

Select the Interior Cube and change the settings to:

Now you have to move the Interior upwards by 10m(switch to Coord. And add 10m to P . Y).

3. Insert a Boole object(Objects -> Modeling -> Boole). Drag the Interior as a child to the Boole object and do the same with Exterior. Rename the boole to Walls, and it should now look like this:

Now we have 4 walls with floor. Next thing to do is to make some windows and a door, this is up to you but I will show the technique.

4. Add Cubes as windows and a door, resize it til’ you’re satisfied with it. Remember that the thickness has to be thicker than the walls. Place your windows where you want them(change views to get it more precise. F1 = Perspective, F2 = Top, F3 = Side and F4 = Front). Do the same with the door and it should look something like this:

Mark the door and your windows(can easily be done by holding SHIFT and click at the objects in the panel. With your objects marked, right click and choose Group objects. Add a Boole object again and drag the group with your objects as a child to the boole and the same with your Walls group. If you’ve done that right it should look like this:

5. Now we’re almost done. To make the floor we are going to use Set selection. Right click your Interior object and click Make editable(or just mark it and hit C). Choose the Polygon tool in your left panel or Tools -> Polygons. As you can see, your cube is slit up in 4 parts. Click at the bottom(floor) part, you may have to zoom in to get passed the top(roof) part. When the edges are colored(red), you now that the polygon is marked.

When it’s marked, go to Selection -> Set selection. With this done you can add as specific texture/material to that part. In the objects panel, on the right side of the Interior, there should be a triangle, click it and name your selection.

Now you got a floor. Drag a texture to the Interior and point it to your selection:

For this example I used a basic floor material that came along with Maxon Cinema.
Now render it and se what you’ve got, here’s mine.

I hope you could follow this one. I know my English isn’t the best(I’m from Sweden) but I did my best.

I'm not a 3D modeller, but this looks like a very well done tutorial - thank you very much for taking the time to post it, I hope we see more from you. <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Very good tutorial you have there. I don't really like using booleans but everyone has his own way of modelling haven't they <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Glad to have you posting here <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/good.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(Y)\' />

Thanks guys!

I don't use the boole either, but it's a god way for beginners to start with. I usually work with the knife and bridge tool when modeling this kind of stuff.

Yep, as I said, there is 1 or 2 tutorials like this out there. I think I know wich one you mean but I can't find it right now. Anyway, this was written by me, and in my opinion a bit easier to follow. When I was a real newbie there was spent loads of time finding god tutorials written for C4D, so I say, make more C4D tutorials!

I will have to agree with Tibs that I don't enjoy using booleans for modelling unless I absolutely have to lol <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> I use the method you stated earlier: Knife, slices, and bridges lol. Thanks for this tutorial... it was a good one! <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
