Turtle Beach Wireless Headset on the Way!

Turtle Beach just announced their plans for the 'Ear Force X2' wireless headset coming to both Xbox and Xbox 360. The first wireless headset for the 360 will deliver a stereo signal instead of a mono signal so sound will be sent to both ears instead of just one. They will also do a great job at cancelling background noises while still delivering in-game sounds crisply. Hopefully this headset, with an estimated wallet draining price of $99 USD, will offer a comfortable and audibly pleasing experience.

Pioneer HTP-XGS1 5.1 surround for Xbox 360

Pioneer is coming out with a 5.1 surround sound system designed specifically for the Xbox 360, which is clearly visible by the color scheme it uses. This setup will pump out a total of 600 watts, and let's just say that'll be more than adequate unless you're trying to make yourself go deaf. Although no official price has been announced, estimates are saying that it will be in the ?200 - ?250 price range, which translates to a steep $349-$440 USD. The HTP-XGS1 will use Multi Channel Acoustic Calibration - a feature that automatically adjusts the sound coming out of the speakers to give you the best listening experience based on your room's layout. This would definitely be a nice piece of hardware that would sound great when you pump up the volume, but having a sound system worth more than the 360 itself seems a little outrageous.

Xbox 360 Camera Brochure at GDC

Microsoft's answer to Sony's Eye Toy is finally making it's way into the public eye. IGN took a look at a brochure at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif. today regarding the Xbox 360 camera

According to the brochure, you'll be able to do video chat over Xbox Live and there's video recording. However, what may be the best feature - gesture recognition. The camera is going to translate your movements in real life into in the game.

The brochure reads: "These features provide developers opportunities for unprecedented levels of innovation and personalization, and enable gamers to customize and socialize in their game worlds in ways they never could before. Additionally, Xbox 360 Camera support is deeply integrated into the Dashboard, making every Xbox 360 console owner a potential customer for the camera and your camera-enabled game."

The camera program will also include XDK support for streaming video. The three-dimensional "face-in-game" for which the EyeToy is famous will be available "through middleware providers."

Here are the specs:

# USB 2.0 bus-powered device
# Smooth, near DV quality video: up to VGA 640x480 at 30 FPS
# High-def images: still photos up to SVGA 1280x980 (1.3 Mp)
# Manually adjustable variable focus: 2 feet to infinity
# Field of View: 43 degrees
# On board image processor
# Digital zoom, cropping
# Auto exposure, white balance, gamma correction, sharpness
# Long (~9 feet) cable to reach around large TVs
# Includes a headset for great audio

Intelligent Remote and Intercooler for the Xbox 360 ships

Nyko Technologies today announced the shipment of two new Xbox 360 accessories: The "Intelligent Remote 360" and the "Intercooler 360".
attachment
attachment
The Intelligent Remote is a smart universal remote for both console and TV that's able to "learn" commands by simply picking up signals from other remotes, with no programming required.

More interesting, the Intercooler: With simple snap-on installation, it's three fans (powered by the console it's attached to) are supposed to dramatically increase airflow and reduce heat throughout the Xbox 360, effectively improving the lifetime and reliability of it's inner components.

Is it just some sort of cash-in on the 360's heat problems (it's origins have been found by now, anyway) or a genuinely helpful device? Only the reviews will tell.

Both accessories will be available for a MSRP of $19.99

Keep Your Xbox 360 Cool as a Cucumber

Some clever soul has figured out a way to keep his Xbox 360 from overheating, even in an unventilated area. Essentially he's used the Antec Notebook Cooler. The cooler is designed for notebook computers, but appears to work a treat when placed under an Xbox 360, it's also USB powered so just plugs directly into the Xbox 360 USB port. The clever chap who thought of this says it fits the 360 almost perfectly and only raises it by about an inch and for the fashion conscious, it's also white in color so matches the Xbox 360.

Even in an unventilated shelf the 360 allegedly stayed cool enough to halt any lock up problems caused by overheating. Sometimes it just takes one smart person to notice the obvious, as is the case here. So if you're experiencing overheating problems and you're stuck for space, a notebook cooling pad may just do the trick and even match the 360's design. Sweet.

GameCom X30 Headset

After Plantronics announced their new X30 headsets a few days back, it would only be a matter of time before they would be featured on hardware sites across the net. The GameCom X30 is a noise-cancelling headset designed for one ear that has inline volume and mute control. It's specially crafted ear-melding design was designed to fit into your ear comfortably instead of being a nuisance like other headsets. Overall, teamxbox says that this design is more futuristic than Plantronics' previously released Halo 2 headset. The volume and mute controls are great to have, and the send/receive voice quality is top-notch. Aside from taking a little time to get used to its unique feel, the GameCom X30 is a great headset for the mere price of $29.99 USD.

XSATA - Yet Another HDD Adaptor

As if the Team Avalaunch and 360SATA Adapters weren't enough, Datel decided to hop on the HDD adaptor wagon with the release of the XSATA. Essentially, this devices allow you to connect your Xbox 360 hard drive to your PC without having to open it up, making it easy to transfer files if you have the appropriate programs. This plug-and-play device is retailing for $40 and boasts transfer speeds up to 480mbps via a USB 2.0 connection. This device is a little different than the other two because it actually sits between your hard drive and the console. Aside from adding a cool blue edge to your 360, you won't have to worry about losing tiny adaptors. Although this will probably cost more than the other two alternatives, you'll definitely get your money's worth here.

Datel's Play and Charge Kit Now Available

Datel announced today that their Play and Charge Kit is in stores and available directly from CodeJunkies. It looks like Datel is trying to have a third party play and charge kit as Microsoft already has an official one under the same name. It looks to do the same functions as Microsoft's but after fully charging the NiMH battery, which takes up to six hours, it will give 30 hours of uninterrupted wireless action. So it seems as if you get five extra hours of game time compared to Microsoft's kit with 25 hours. While most people with wireless controllers already has a play and charge kit, including myself, the ones who don't have one yet should check out Datel's because it only cost $14.99, so you pay less and get more wireless playtime before having to recharge.

Headset Adapter

One of the most annoying things about the Xbox 360 is the plug design for the headset communicator. Whereas the original Xbox featured a standard 2.5mm jack, the 360’s headset uses a unique version of the plug, which means even if you already have a perfectly good headset, you can’t use it with the 360. Even a headset bought for the original Xbox won't fit.

Thanks to Datel, you don’t have to buy a whole new headset to communicate on Xbox Live with your 360. The 360 Headset Adapter plugs into the socket on your console’s hand controller, and allows you to use any headset with a 2.5mm jack. And that’s most of ‘em. If you have a headset for your original Xbox, you’ll certainly be able to use it with Datel’s 360 Headset Adapter. And it’s a lot cheaper than a new headset…

Features

* Use any headset with a 2.5mm plug with your Xb360
* Use your original Xbox headset with your Xb360
* Much cheaper than a new headset!

E3 2006: The New Wireless Fleet
Microsoft unveils a wireless steering wheel, headset and more. First shots and details.
by Douglass C. Perry

May 9, 2006 - Today, the day before E3 2006, Microsoft unleashed the first set of wireless controllers since the console launched in November 2005, and today's new fleet take the wireless idea to the next level.

Microsoft unveiled three new wireless products, all internally developed: 1) The Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel; 2) the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset; 3) and the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows.

After studying the statistics on attach rates, Microsoft watched as wireless products went from a 17%-18% attach rate (the ration tie-in of peripherals and consoles sold together) in 2004 to a 60% attach rate in 2005 and 2006. Wireless controllers, says Microsoft's Albert Penello, the global platform marketing lead, responsible for console and accessories, out-sell wired controllers four to one. Microsoft plans on delivering these three wireless peripherals by fall 2006 on Xbox 360 and PC.

The wireless steering wheel.
The Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel (release date: fall, price TBD) is in development internally at Microsoft by several members from the Microsoft Sidewinder team. The first-party design has a thick, contoured rubber pad for lap usage, and a sturdy clamp for table usage. The wireless steering wheel comes with F1-style shift paddles and pedals equipped with a medal rim to anchor your heels while playing.

The existing battery life is the same as the wireless controller and, by using the AC adaptor, you'll get force feedback. There are two levels of feedback, the basic rumble motors that pick up wheels on gravel and low-level rumbles, and force feedback, from the actual car performance -- slides, crashes, etc. The same rechargeable unit that works for the controllers works with the Xbox 360 wireless steering wheel. The wheel comes with full Dpad usage, ABXY buttons, and a guide button. It comes in one color, "chill white."

The wireless headset.
The Xbox 360 Wireless Headset (release date: fall, price TBD) is a small ear-clip that mimics the current fad of Blue Tooth-enabled cell phones. It fits over your ear; there are two sizes for smaller and larger size ears. The wireless earpiece features better sound quality than previous headsets and features a better mic and better sound reception technology. It features an adjustable boom, 30-foot range, and a built-in lithium battery with eight hours and a wall charger to recharge.

The wireless PC adaptor.
The Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows (release date: fall, price TBD) enables players who use both consoles and PCs to attach wireless accessories to their PC. Using a simple USB port, players can plug this tool into their PC permitting other wireless controllers and accessories to be used with their PC.

Universal Remote: Also For The XBox360

So you have a TV, a VCR, a DVD, a CD Stereo, and for around 20 to 30 US dollars, chances are you could find yourself a nice little universal remote at the local "big box" store. If you've thrown in an XBox 360 requirement into the mix though, you've probably been out of luck. Until now.

For the gamer/TV addict/all-around couch potato who needs ONE remote to do it all, Logitech's Harmony Advanced Universal Remote may be the answer to your prayers. This device is slim, stylish, is colored to match either the black or silver model, and has a display backlit in green (which has gotta be cool, right?). Best of all, it will deal with almost any device in your living room that communicates via infrared.

In order to configure the Harmony, you'll need a PC with USB and Internet connections and a CD-ROM drive.

The device comes with the software CD, a mini-B USB cable, batteries and the quick-start guide. To configure your remote, install the software on your PC, hook up the Harmony via the USB cable, and follow the step-by-step instructions. One caveat: the Harmony will support up to 12 different devices, so prior to configuring, you'll want to gather all the information on any and all devices (manufacturer, model number, type, etc.). When the software launches, it will ask what level user you are. To be safe, swallow your pride and choose Beginner - your life will be MUCH easier.

Once all device info is entered, the software will configure your Harmony via the USB connection.

Switching between devices is done through the Activities button. If you encounter a problem - for example, when you select "Watch a DVD," the TV turns off - you can press the Help button, bringing up a series of questions that, when answered, will create a solution.

You may also choose to operate the Harmony with the Devices button, but it is more limiting - you will need to press this each time you want to switch.

Logitech's SRP is $129 USD, although it can be grabbed for as little as $85, so comparison shopping is warranted. If you have just a TV and an XBox, you're better off without this, but if your set-up is more complex with several devices, the Harmony is a worthwhile purchase that can make your life a wee bit easier.
