Landscape Studio (freeware)

Post by Tami »

Landscape Studio is a freeware heightmap generator for Microsoft Windows and the Mac OS. Providing a number of unique tools, it gives the user far more control over terrain generation. It is Java based and therefore easily transferable across many platforms.

Features -

* Uses a tabbed workspace, allowing the user to work on several projects at once (ala Firefox's tabbed browsing)
* Terrain Application Mapping: This unique method of generation applies fractal randomness to a pre-designed heightmap based on an application map
* Create your own terrain generation algorithms, importers, exporters and plugins using Java
* Export to several formats including RAW, TER and JPEG, easily load into Terragen and other rendering programs
* Generate terrain using various algorithms including - ridged multifractal, procedural multifractal, heterogeneous multifractal, offset square plasma fractal, hybrid additive/multiplicative multifractal, procedural fBm fractal, deposition fractal, fault fractal and Voronoi
* Multiple filters including various types of erosion, gradients, spatial averaging, midpoint flip and inversion
* Preview terrains in real-time when changing attributes - no more trial and error!
* Preview terrains in 3D
26/02/07 - Quick update (And regarding advertising)
As much as I enjoyed working on Landscape Studio and building a community around it, unfortunately it didn't pay the bills (and while my new job does, it doesn't leave me time to work on Landscape Studio). So while I may not have any software updates, I have altered the web site a little (including the addition of Google AdWords to attempt to at least break even). However, I do promise that if I have a fair amount of free time in the future I'll put some effort into Landscape Studio. I'd also very much like to hear from you all - how you've been using Landscape Studio, what you've used it for/in conjunction with, your thoughts and suggestions, etc. Wishing you all the best!
