Arces Engine (free)

Post by Tami »

Developed inside the Arces Laboratory of Univerita' di Bologna (Faculty of Engineering) Arces Engine is a 3D engine build from the ground up for a special platform called Whyre (a wearable computer developed by Ducati Sistemi. It is currently used by Arces Laboratories to valorize Cultural Heritage resources and archeological sites. The really unique features of this machine forced the development of a 3D engine from the ground up. Every engine's component, from the renderer to the resource managers has been specially developed for it).

Features

* DirectX 8 based
* Developed for wearable computer
* Bsp
* Lightmaps
* Skeletal animation of Milkshape models
* DirectPlay Based Network system
* Developed for an extremely resource constrained platform
* Renderer implemented to be as simple as possible. (The target platform doesn't support hardware acceleration nor vertex or pixel shaders.)
* Engine build to aquire data from position sensors and accelerometers. This makes the application able to update simulation without requiring any specific user input, simply recording the user's movements.

CG Integration

The target platform, as a wearable computer doesn't support pixel or vertex shaders and the engine was not developed with that functionalities in mind. This.. was the perfect situation to try to integrate a shading system and research the aspects of this integration, from shader loading and compilation to shaders binding and geometry processing.

nVidia Cg framework is used.
