Indie Developer Awarded Game Design Patent
Mousechief, Co. are proud to receive Pat. No. 7,309,283. They are particularly proud that no lawyer was allowed to participate. The USPTO awarded 7,309,283 to Keith Nemitz on Dec. 18th, 2007.
Mr. Nemitz declared, "Nowadays, patents are often abused. They are used to control innovation, stifle it, or obtain income from lawsuits instead of from the invention itself. However, individuals still rely on patents for public recognition and protection from exploitation.
"The patent process is a grueling test of patience and diligence. Any 'small entity' that passes without the expense of lawyers can be doubly proud of their achievement."
Mousechief's patent covers a specific mechanism which controls interactive narratives in a novel, engaging, and elegant way. It's nascent deployment can be tried for free in the shareware game, 'The Witch's Yarn'.
Already, our technology can be seen to influence upcoming games, such as 'Mata Hari'. The strong, noun nature of its control mechanism and resulting, brief conversational exchanges are highly reminiscent of 'The Witch's Yarn'.
Will we be suing Mata Hari's pants off? No. There's a better way! We're anxious to play her game, not extort it.
Mousechief welcomes the game industry, especially casual game developers, to contact us. We can help them to employ this pick-up-and-play style of interactive narrative. Also welcome are other indie developers and novice game makers. Licensing for them is as inexpensive as buying a copy of 'The Witch's Yarn'. Mousechief encourages experimentation with this open-ended technology."
Mousechief's next title, 'Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!' does not use this technology. Future products are planned which will expand upon the invention in directions that could obsolete traditional, narrative control methods.
