I have this 'wonderful' new Lenovo machine, it runs slower than molasses in January. The fact that it has Vista on it, is a whole different pain in my( yes I meant to click that, confirm, yes I want it to run, allow) butt.
It was supposed to come with 512MB of RAM, but the properties only showed 447MB of RAM.
I took it into NCIX...but the line up inside was almost out the front door, so I decided to grin and bear a trip 'round the corner to Best Buy.
O.K., Best Buy is not my fav for customer service, if you *can* find some one in a blue shirt, they are from a different department...or should be :s.
I lucked out, the gentleman I finally cornered sounded like he knew what he was talking about(not that I would really know for sure).
He explained that my integrated graphics card was using part of the RAM so the computer doesn't see it as Ram that it could use for other things. O.K. good, that means that that stick of RAM isn't neccessarily damaged. Another stick of 512 was what my plan was, but, alas there was no such thing in stock. Then he says, "512 is all you need unless you're running Vista, then I would really go with the 2GB stick, which btw, I have in stock." Why yes, I am running Pain in my Butt Vista. He laughed and said, "Here 2GB will make you much happier, it might also improve it enough that you'll find you don't need a better graphics card. But, make sure you run the computer a few times to ensure your computer has recognized the new RAM and is utilizing it, before you run Guild Wars to see if you still need a graphics card."
Well, this new plan ran tickety boo!!! I am much happier. But, What I really want to know is:
How does 2GB of RAM = 895MB of ram once it's installed?????????

RAM vs The Blonde
Are all the RAM sticks the same? e.g DDR2 - 677.
Have you been to the bios settings and looked to see if you could change it?
Have you looked at the motherboard help booklet to see the max amount of RAM it can hold?
Have you tried to get vista to recognise the extra RAM through settings?
Have you installed it properly? Sometimes RAM needs to be placed in a certain way; that is in a sequence.
Some more stuff.
One of the RAM sticks might be broken.
One of the slots for the RAM stick might be broken.
Maybe there's dust in one of the RAM slots.
Some Extra Stuff.
Run a Memory Test to see if all the RAM is fine, and to see if it can detect all the sticks of RAM. ( I suggest Microsoft's; http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp)
Another option is that you may have to do a BIOS update. An old Bios might be the reason that the RAM is not showing up.
Also you could try removing the 512mb stick of RAM and just leaving the 2x 1gig of RAM.
Just some Suggestions.
