419Legal is a project and initiative launched by Inspector Rian Visser of the Johannesburg Commercial Branch in the South African Police Services. Inspector Visser presented his initiative, which entails proactive measures taken against Nigerian 419 offenders, moving away from current reactive measures implemented by law enforcement agencies around the world.

The initiative was approved by the South African Police Service’s Head Office and was implemented on a trial period in order to determine its successes. Inspector Visser launched 419Legal, at his own costs, and started the project on the 12th of March 2004 before it was declared an official service of the South African Police Services.

From the beginning of the project members of a large scambaiting group, located at www.419eater.com, joined 419Legal by offering their expertise in the fight against Nigerian 419 offenders. The project turned out to be a huge success from the day of its launch and partnership with this team of unique individuals.

Due to its huge successes 419Legal was officially accepted and incorporated in the Johannesburg Commercial Branch and started serving as an International service within the Nigerian 419 Task team.

419Legal information is gathered and analysed by members of the Nigerian 419 Task Team, who are also responsible for following up on information provided by its informers and general public. 419Legal also utilize the services of Interpol when distributing information to law enforcement agencies in other countries outside the jurisdiction of the South African Police Services.
The South African Police Services does not only have a responsibility towards its own country’s residents, but also to every other individual around the world. For this reason 419Legal is an international service, which can be approached by any individual around the world.

Due to the nature of its services 419Legal can also be seen as an International watchdog protecting innocent victims against the criminal activities of Nigerian 419 offenders
