Eyes

I looked up into the eyes before me
The eyes I’d known intimately
I gasped and stared…
There, instead, where the eyes of a stranger
Where were the eyes I’d known?
The eyes I needed to see?
I turned, searching….
There they were! over there!
I ran towards them, then stopped
My heart began to pound…
They were gone1
NO! In their place were the stranger’s eyes
My ears rang with the pounding of my heart
I edged slowly back; they followed
Faster! They followed
I turned to run
NO! A silent scream
There they were, those same eyes, watching…
Spinning, searching to escape…
NO! NO! NO! All around, closing in…
Those same eyes, watching me…
No where to turn, stumbling to my knees
Closer, closer, head throbbing with each heart beat
Hands pressed to ears…
Still …louder, louder, closer, closer…
Arms thrown up to shield my face
NO! Voice suddenly found
I sat upright, soaked in sweat
All was dark, the eyes were gone
My heart slowed, breathing calmed
Slowly, the room focused
Hot and sticky, I sought out the cool soothing water
Revelled in the soft fluffy towel
Breathing in its sweet perfume…. Deep sigh…
As I replaced the towel…
I caught my reflection in the mirror
I gasped! The dream came flooding back
There1 in the mirror! The stranger’s eyes, watching me…
