Codename Longhorn to be called Windows Vista

Bob Stein has just posted that the next version Windows, currently codenamed 'Longhorn', will in fact be named Windows Vista.

There is currently no confirmation or announcement from Microsoft on this, but as I am in Seattle meeting some people from Microsoft at the moment I will be asking around...

[b]Update[/b]: Microsoft has just posted their 6AM PST Press Release confirming that Windows: Codename Longhorn will be called Windows Vista. Microsoft has also launched their official "Windows Vista" web page. Announced on the page: "Beta 1, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005".

[b]Update[/b]: Steven Bink along with numerous other Windows enthusiast site admins have suggested we nickname Vista "WinVi". "Vi is the first two letters of Vista, and Windows Vista is Windows NT 6.0. In Roman Numerals VI is the number six." ActiveWin is reporting that the official tagline for WinVi is "Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world."

I'm eagerly awaiting a Microsoft operating system which will bring me confidence - especially in a security sense - but I guess we'll need to wait and find out just how Windows Vista (already dubbed WinVi by evangelists) turns out.

Looks like Microsoft haven't explored how common "vista" is. A google search turns up over 20 million matches to the word "vista" while the name "longhorn" was pretty unique. Microsoft have also failed to discover a small business named "Vista" which is located in their front door in Redmond. [url=\"http://www.vista.com\"]Vista.com[/url] was founded in 1999 and has offices in Redmond, Bellingham, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Clearly, they won't be celebrating the announce of Windows Vista.

Scott; the folks at Vista.com may be celebrating, elaborating on Josh's post; If they kick up a fuss, guess who'll be willing to settle it out of court with a very generously sized cheque?

True...but thats if MS is willing to settle out of court. Legal fee's against MS would probably put them out of business.

Giving Microsofts size, there really isn't many business out there that would be "significant".
