Decision Time

Post by Tami »

I\'ve thought about this for several days now, if not the last few weeks. Read it all the way through-carefully, before writing any reply.

As KillaNet has grown, I\'ve watched staff participation dwindle. Projects aren\'t getting done, things are ignored, I have to push most of the time just to get content on the forums and entries in the competitions, and frankly, I\'m tired. New content on sites is what keeps people coming back, it\'s what keeps the search engine spiders coming back--and it is those same users who you will want coming back when we have a store running-the people who are interested in spending money on the quality products you all are capable of producing. The people you want renting server space, the ones who will eventually pay the wages around here.

Granted, you all have lives. But you know what? So does NightStorm, so do I, so does Vulture, so do the others who are trying to push KN forward. Certainly some of you are working on projects, but others who aren\'t could be helping out in other areas. I\'m near the point of burnout. So is Vulture. We may joke about The List...but it\'s there, it\'s real---and sometimes it feels like we are trying to do it all alone. Some of you have very specific jobs, and you\'re doing them well - sometimes too well >.<img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

But...every delay, every project that is just let go by the wayside, lets someone else in the Network down. We don\'t want King using a free template for the xClan site, so we posted a request in the Design Crew area...the ones who are supposed to be the \"elite\" designers around here. 21 views, not one reply, not even a question about the site. Is it fair to hold him up on stuff he\'s trying to work on? Granted, he needs to learn to make sites but right now that\'s not his job; his job is to get in the xbox users.

Other people are depending on the \"senior\" staff. Hell...*I* am depending on the senior staff. We have people...writers...*waiting* for a domain to be up and ready-people who aren\'t even members here yet, but who know that we provide quality help, quality information, people I know personally--who are waiting...and waiting...and waiting. Two other senior staff members, waiting for a writers site, as that is going to be \"their\" area. In the meantime, they work on other stuff....*sees a poser question in chat*....okay..try to work on other stuff <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' /> (sorry nem)

Funstuff...should have more staff-made content by now. Yes the subdomain is a mess but so what? I\'ll get around to it when I have time, if I have time. It is all well and good to point out things that haven\'t been updated, things that have a typo. So the Cafe site is way out of date; design an uber Gaming Store layout for it then.

How much of anyone\'s time does it really take to share a thought, a web URL, SOMETHING to add content to the forums (remember we DO have two of them) Josh and audio are very good about getting the news onto Gaming, but just because there is news posted every day, doesn\'t mean that someone can\'t start a discussion thread... \"Hey how do you....\" \"Hey, what do you think of ... \"

I have people contacting me, wanting to be staff, wanting to be paid staff. The physical location for KN is closer to becoming a reality, and that means spending more time working on other things; That means Networking with other sites, which I have been doing, contacting people, contacting sites, gathering information, getting free advertising from other people I do know--it is continual, KillaNet is a huge entity that has incredible potential, but if those at the oars don\'t participate, we may as well just drop anchor and not move another inch forward. Then KillaNet will just end up like the other sites dropping off the net, falling apart at the seams. We are stronger than that. Each and every one of you has the potential to be earning money through KN\'s opportunities.

This is one of those days when I look at my credit card bills and wonder wtf am I doing this for? I go out of my way to provide what I can for the staff, to listen, to help, to share what I can, to find beneficial programmes for KillaNet and its staff/members to be a part of. I pay for the postage on the books many of you have enjoyed...have all of you reciprocated with your part of the deal? Some have, many haven\'t-and I am the one who bears the brunt of that from the publishing company.

How many of you have free use of databases, webspace, email....and in return you\'re doing what for KillaNet? I can\'t afford to pay the staff, even those who do deserve to get paid, but gawds you know, you would think that you would try a little harder to support the cause. Why do I go out of my way to get distribution permissions, to get copyright use permissions...because I *care* about all of you, because you all deserve to have the opportunities to search out different areas you are interested in, to get all that can be offered to you.

Am I ranting? Yup..am I trying to not offend anyone? Of course, because I don\'t *like* to offend people; I don\'t *like* to demand things--but come on people, a little help here. I\'m not threatening to remove anyone from staff, I am not asking anyone to quit, or going to stop looking for programmes etc., I am asking for help, for some favours in return for what *you* are given. If you weren\'t mentioned/singled out for the work you *are* doing, I\'m sorry--but I know who you are--and you know who you are...well, I hope you do, anyway <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

So maybe it\'s not just decision time for me, but for everyone. I don\'t want to see anyone leave, and I know some of you are going to think I\'m asking way too much; in reality, I am asking no more now than I was a year and a half ago, or a year ago, or six months ago.

I also know that this is going to end up being copied to others who have no business seeing it, to those who are trying to undermine what we are trying to accomplish....just remember that by doing so, you\'re undermining yourself, your friends, and KillaNet. If you feel it\'s necessary to partake in such activities, maybe you don\'t really belong here. You know who you are, I\'m not going to name you, and you know exactly what I\'m talking about.

i havent replied to kings thread as i really cant design sites...useless at it, is why my business site, after about three months of work still is fully functioning lol.
is there something other than avatars, banners, brushes and tutorials you want me to do? i know you probably dont want people replying to this asking what you want from them, but it would help me to know....i look at that list and other than the doodles i'm making and, yes, opening poser trying to learn some of it....theres not a whole lot on there i can do. book reviews are no problem, one down one to go.....and to be honest i'm not sure exactly what is i'm supposed to do on writers or what contribution i can make lol.....i'm happy to post articles relevant to writing and book reviews, but feel like that isnt contributing enough.
my goals for the next five weeks (puppies due august 23rd so will be swamped at that point with two litters due at the same time) are to:
*try and finish my bryce tutorial
*avatars, brushes and banners
*get that last book review to you
*learn at least enough with poser so that i can make something pretty and write a tut on it..
i add content to the site when i can, usually it was in the forensics lab, but i havent had much to show and tell lately as i've been mostly learning about the programs....hence the quiet period from me.
nice rant/ramble by the way <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

I see how hard Adaera works, I see how hard others work, and I agree with Ada...some people work very hard...some aren\'t getting anything finnished. I know life intrudes....I haven\'t even had time to enter banner or wall paper contests lately. We are all bennefiting, but the work seems very un-even. I don\'t know what the solution is or how to go about relieving the some of the work load on some of the staff. But, I do promise to do everything I can to help...once my current *issues* are resolved.

/me wanders of to rant about males, children, parents, inlaws.........

First of all, I agree the post needed to be made, as when reading it.. unfortunately it applied to me on some levels.

Book reviews - I\'m owing 2, going to make these a priority for tomorrow as they\'re a small job and I\'ve had plenty of opportunities.

Download script - not as far along as I would like, and really should be I guess.. no excuses. granted I\'ve had a lot on my mind but I can work when I put my mind to it.

Frankly I hate to do this but I\'ve been more preoccupied with my personal life lately some of you may know the story, I\'m really trying to get back into the swing of things around here now college has finished)

No offence taken from the post, and I don\'t see why it should offend anyone else either, my life\'s changed so much lately I\'m just adjusting (if anyone wants to know the story.. you\'re in for a long long long long long day/night).. but kn is definitely going to play a big part..

My apologies if anything bad comes (or has came) around as a result of my reduced presence and workrate. Even being in a position when a post like this applies to me makes me feel damn bad.

Like ner0, this applies to me and I don't take any offence. I haven't been pulling my weight as an admin.

Like ner0, few things going on in real life atm (17 year old guys, must be a trend <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' /> ) but that's no excuse.

In the meantime, I've got to step up the work on writers and get it together ASAP.

I apologise to Ada and the rest of the staff, and will do the best to gain back some respect by working really hard to get these sites done.

Ditto to Pauls first line. Ive slackened off with posting technology news, posting much at all for that matter. I seldom visit gaming because I forget its there. Ada is correct, we all have our personal lives; although each of ours are different which no one can help but yourself (Not saying that in a defensive way). I wish to see KN go as far as possible, if not further, everyone with that same view; we need to pull together and do what we can

I agree with everything ada said and I feel that this post had to be made sooner or later. I\'m not going to re-iterate all that ada has said, but I\'m at the point where I\'d rather not sign on, rather not come onto the forums because I know how much stuff I\'ve got waiting for me.

I\'m not the only one out there that can code and it would be nice, even just for a few weeks, if people who know they can do it actually come forward and help out. I\'m not naming anyone here, nor is this aimed at anyone in particular...every once in a while I\'d like to stop going round the circle another time.

Ada and myself have been discussing ways in which we can restructure the network staff, and its probably that there will be some changes in the near future. I\'m not going to go into detail right now, and those who read the forum regularly will get all the info they\'ll need.

One last thing before closing; there are 14 network staff (if I can count properly), only 2 have yet replied to this topic...yet over 80 views. If you\'re wondering why a restructure is required, maybe this is why?

Well time for me to post in something here.

First of all this is the first view and immediate post <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

Now, I feel that i personally don\'t really do a lot for the staff and for the network. I don\'t feel offended by this post, this is something i have felt before. I try do to as much as possible but my knowledge is limited to 3d. I try to give Ada several models to put in the download area. Allthough I can\'t put all my models in because that\'s just not possible. Another matter is the writing off tutorials, because c4d has become my program I find it hard to know what tutorials to write for people who are just getting started, so some suggestions would be very welcome.

Again I was not offended in any way by this post but I still think that I don\'t do enough work.

*hides from the list* I too agree with ada and the others. I am greatful for the hosting and etc ada.

have to disagree with trin on one thing...

\"Like ner0, few things going on in real life atm (17 year old guys, must be a trend tongue.gif ) but that\'s no excuse.\"

That i dont agree with, i have seen people put off \"real life\" stuff and everything to the point that they refuse to go out, then they end up losing their house/job/friends and etc, then they end up getting depression.

Scott, i would love to help code stuff, its just i am not as \"advanced\" as some people(points to the OOP/Crazy coders >.>)

I agree there, but I already checked with Tami about this thread and she asked me this morning to throw some ideas around. I haven\'t come up with any ideas, yet I\'m posting...............ok I\'m insane <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /yahoo.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(yahoo)\' /> YAY!

Well if we have 14 network staff and we have uhhh lots of sites... How about we divide our network staff into groups.. Uh. nevermind, we\'ve already done this... ehhh... How come I feel like I have nothing ot say here? lol. ehm.. *cough* Do you think we can <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... shutup.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(tape)\' /> *adds filler text to his post* Filler Text. Filler Text. Filler Text. Filler Text. *stops*

Well first I guess I\'ll have to say the admins make a decision on what to do with the user who likes to take stuff out of our private areas and give them to people who don\'t have access here. Erm, I\'ve always said this before, but if a staff member is not keeping up their end of the deal of being staff then uhhhhh punish them I guess lol... not sure <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

I don\'t know what to post here seriously..... I\'m kind of rambling atm and I\'m sorry for that :S Maybe you could put some requirements on being staff? Contribute something usefull to the forum at least one day per week? And no they can\'t all post something at the last minute on Sunday either >.> I dunno.. I tend to get more ideas in a real-time chat with everyone lol <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Erm.... yeah.

well...i read this once at work yesterday (during lunch), i havent been able to go on my computer (for various reasons) for a few days...

in short, i am agreeing with pretty much everything that has been said ^^^ that way. i havent had the highest priority jobs assigned to me, but i have had some which ive slacked off on...

Tarot Script- worked on for ~5 hours last night, all the cards are databased and most of the retrieval code is written, just need to finalise that (should be maybe, another nights work) and then pretty the layout up a little <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

this is only a short reply, as its morning..and i must be off to work..uhhh..now! <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

What can I do? Gimme something!

Adaera has a way with words that's like a woman president, only she puts her finger on the issue instead of dancing around it like real male presidents.
